hmmm... i have a spare , but ya can't have it , he he. I had my 82 yt175 out in the snow on the trails yesterday, it works great. if ya tell me the trouble i may be able to offer advice. Mine didn't run when i bought it , but , man it goes now. Whats your trouble? spark? fuel? air?oh yeah i have the factory service manual , also. good luck.
hey..im not sure what the trouble is...i do have fuel, compression, spark, and it wont seem to start. i have the top end off now and the piston looks brand new along with the rings. the cylinder is clean and has no scratches. could it be the reeds that would make it not run? i checked them but they seemed fine....im not sure though because i havent had to much experience with reeds..beides in my cr125..but those reeds arenmt metal and the ones in the trike are. if theres anthing im missing please tell me, thanks...steve
I'll tell ya, what i know.I had trouble with mine not starting because the float in the carb wasn't set right. it would flod bad and not start. i tried the factory settings but it still wanted to flood.so i measured from the bottom of the bowl to the fuel intake, with calipers. i did a little math and set it up so it would just take fuel and not flood, it worked great. try a little gas in the spark plug hole, not too much. then reinstall a dry plug and crank it over. it should run a little then die.could be your idle screw isnt in the right place, turn it all the way in then back it out 1 and 1/4 turn.also if you're mixing your gas dont put in too much oil it wiil foul your plug and the plug wont spark, hope this helps, let me know how it went.keep your thumb on the gas when cranking and give it a quick shot of gas as soon as it fires over , good luck.
factory specs on the reeds are valve lift 0.035 inches, bending limit 0.008 inches.
note: bring the chamber in the cylinder reed valve housing to aling with the 5 mm diameter hole in the reed valve body and the pipe joint attached to the carburetor joint, and tighten the reed valve assembly.
if these are out of alignment, the fuel pump will malfunction and no fuel will reach the carburator, thus making it impossible to start the engine. tightening tourque:8Nm(0.8 m.kg, 5.8 ft.lb) good luck.
float height 25+- 1 mm (0.98+- 0.04 in. air screw turns out 1 and 1/4 these are factory settings. reed thickness 0.2mm(0.008 in.) carb type vm24ss/mikuni. hope this helps..
well while it is down be sure to measure the ring gap in the cylinder. if it is used i bet a new set of rings would help alot.Originally Posted by yam17582
oh yeah, one other thing i forgot to mention.the previous owner of my trike,(smart fella), installed a primer pump to prime the carb(force feed fuel to carb), on cold starts. the same kind used on older snowmobiles, snow blowers, etc. he driled a hole through the plastic, left side and installed it there.i pump about 8 times on cold starts it works like a charm.same idea as priming through the spark plug hole with gas.if your trike has been sitting for a long time, (a few years or more)you may have to take it off, strip all brass off of it and bring it somewhere to have it dipped in carb cleaning solvent, you could buy your own solvent but it is expensive, cheaper just to bring it to a small engine shop and have it dipped overnight, then blow out all the ports with compressed air. carb could be varnished with old gas residue causing things to gum up.
