Lots of time, and a bit of money. I figure it costs me about $150-200 Can$ a year to run mine.

Another option is, if you have a good connection with a static IP address, is to run a simple webserver at home.
I personally recomend an old Mac for a webserver because it is cheap, easy and you don't get hacked.

You could build a web site like 3WW. With our current storage / bandwidth useage it only cost $600 - $800 per year ( and climbing ). It's worth every penny.

Most ISP's give you 5 meg free with your connection. Call them and find out. Those geocities and other addresses never get my clicks. No one likes pop-ups and all the other BS that goes with them. Might be free but they annoy the hell out of people so they won't come back.
I do my site just hoping to help some people out. I don't have enough traffic to generate any "supporter" dollars, but the site is over 50 meg and uses a lot of bandwidth so I have to pay for a host.
Also the bit it costs for your own address (www._.com) is worth it.

That 5 meg is nothin. I put up one measly picture of myself and BAM! most of that was gone. I took it off since then now I have a lot more space. Its http://home.elp.rr.com then you go under "pi8tures" and those are mine. I don't have a picture of my atc yet though but I have an idea of what to put just that I haven't been able to pull it off yet.

Guys use "save for web" in Photoshop and your 1 meg pic will be 100k and look the same on the screen. Suddenly 5 megs is like 50 megs.

What version of Photoshop are you using? I have 5.0 LE. I unfortunately don't seem to have save for web option. That must be the 'LE' part. Bogus!
