    Aircooled R questions

    This is my first experience with an aircooled pinger. I have an 82 250r. How should I mix the fuel? The same as my liquid cooled bikes? I use 50:1 PJ1 2t. And am about to switch to blue marble. Plan on 50:1 with it also. Is that too lean for an aircooled? How long can I run it before I need to let it cool down? Rode about 5.5 miles today and it seemed pretty hot. It was open trails running adout 30 mph, 4th and 5th gear. The plug looked good but when it got hot it did not want to idle. Let it cool adout 5-10 mins and it ran good again, is this common? Never having fooled with one before, I don't want to melt it down. The main trail we ride is 11 miles for the loop, a lot of it is slow in the woods. Should I be able to make this without stopping?

    Just what i think

    I don't like 50 to one in nothing i like 32 to one in every thing except outbord motors.I gues if it seams like some thick oil and it says you can it's ok. I just dont trust it.2 strokes idle funy when they are hot some carbs have a easy nob to adjust the idle mixture for that reason.Also it's hard to belive but air cooled motors are tougher than the water cooled ones you can beat the s#!t out of them don't wory about over heating it as long as it's jeted right.Don't let it sit idleing to long and try to keep it moving so the air passes over the fins to kool it.Run it i the corect gear don't lug it or it will build up more heat than it want's.They don't port air cooled motors as agresive as water cooled motors from the factory to keep the heat doun.On a 100 deg. farinhight day you can run till the tank is empty only leting it cool wile you refuel.Try to keep mud out of the fins also. After you make it out off the mud hole with the motor still running you can wash the mud out of them and be on your way.It's important to keep it runing if the motor hot and your splashing it with water so it don't cool doun to fast and hurt something.

    I run mine at 40:1 and it is doing fine. Like CW says just keep the air coming across the fins. I have ridden mine for two hours and it was pretty warm on the legs, but has not suffered any problems that I have found yet. Seems to be pretty tough.

    My buddy converted some trx air dams to his air cooled wheeler..Says he has better power when hot with them on..Kind of bulky but what ever keeps them alive..i also agree with the 40.1 mix..

    I've been mixing my 85r 30:1 and she seems to run fine. Also this is what the previous owner ran it at also. Not hijacking the thread or anything but does location and weather depend on how much you mix?

    On my 86R I run 20:1 because I run a thicker oil Castor 927. I run 16FLOZ(flow ounces) of oil in my bike per 5 gal, and it runs fine.So thats 3 1/2 ounces per gal.

    I won't jump into the oil mixture arguments, but I've owned lots of air cooled two strokes. Many times in summer (85 to 90 degrees) I would ride 8 or 10 hours on everything from fast dirt roads to slow trails, stopping only to gas up. Like several said already, just keep mud out of the fins and keep moving and all should be fine.

    doesnt the manual say 20:1?

    I have been running 50:1, but I am going to drop to 32:1 or 40:1 to be safe.

    ive run 32:1 in my 83 its is fine like that, also an air cooled motor runs hotter than a liquid all the time, if you own both it may feal weird to feal how hot the motor is compared to the liquid motors, dotn worry its just the nature of the beast.

    I would say 32:1, that's what I ran in my old air-cooled bikes.
    They do tend to run a little funny when they get real warm.
    As long as it seems to be running okay, and it isn't losing power, you'll be okay.
    They are actually pretty tough if jetted right.
    Just for the record 3.5 oz. per gallon is about 35:1, not 20: 1 as 250R4life mentioned.
    20:1 would be 6.4 oz. per gallon. 32:1 would be 4 oz. per gallon.
    All you have to remember is that you have 128 oz in a gallon.
    Decide what ratio you want to run and divide 128 by that, and it will give you how many oz. per gallon you need.
    For example......32:1 would be 128 divided by 32, which comes out to 4, so 4 oz. per gallon.

    You dont have to go by that. The 2 stroke oil we have now is a far higher quality. But it also has to do with brand, if I went to wal-mart and got their 2 stroke oil that comes in a little contain I'd be running at 20:1 . I run Klotz at 40:1 and it runs great in my fooler

    I am running motul 715 ester.

    I just mixed up 3 gallons at 32:1 to see how it does.

    but now I hear it knocking (see thread "can this make my 250r knock") so I am not sure if I am ever going to get it right before it dies...
