Sates That Did Not Title ATV's

Does anybody know which states did not title ATV's in the 80's. I want to buy a frame and build a bike but, I want a title and don't want the hassle of trying to get a title for a bike from a state that never had them.

I bought my 200x in Maine and they do not issue titles for these, I don't know why. Now I live back in Florida and just got a title issued from the State for like $25-30. Got one for my boat too!

MI didn't have titles either. In this state it costs about $15-20 to get a title for a machine that did not have one. I've done it with all my machines. When you buy something, just ask for a bill of sale to the persons address and the frame #'s. They shouldn't have a problem giving it either, unless it's hot. That's all you need in this state. Also on snowmobiles if it's been more than 15 years since a sled was stolen, you can walk in and get a registration with a bill of sale(fake obviousley, but it works). I had a machine that I knew was hot and the frame #'s didnt even come up as stolen. They check frame #'s on their computers too.

It wasn't required in Alaska. If you wanted to get insurance for a 3 or 4 wheeler or snowmachine you do need to register it with the state.

I believe in recent years this has changed and all ORV's do need to be registered with the state, but most people don't.

I am fortunate to have the Certificate of Origin for my 250SX. It just says when Honda made this 250SX trike with said serial numbers. Exactly what I would need if it were to get stolen.

In NY you can get around not having a title to register an ATV, you just need a few extra forms from the DMV and a vin tracing.

Getting a list of all the states that didnt issue titles, doesnt really mean much anyways since most of them issued titles, but they were tossed by the 2nd owners who didnt want to pay transfer taxes until it became mandatory in some states. Ohio issued titles, but good luck finding one from an 80's ATV unless you buy from an original owner. This may sound simplistic, but I think it would be a lot easier to just ask a potential seller if he has a title. I sell a lot of frames on ebay, and I always put in my ad whether or not I have a title, because if I dont put it in there, Ill get several emails asking me if I have one.

As far as I know, Oklahoma never issued titles to ATVs when they were sold new, just a bill of sale. My friend has an 88 250R that he bought new in the crate, and he has no title for it.

as long as you have proof of ownership you are good to go... but some places like police, and tow yards only except a title to get yr bike back(as proof of ownership).. just fyi..

the other issue that comes up, if you run a vin, and its listed to a previous owner, the previous owner get the bike.. if no one else trys to claim.. even if they sold in the poast..
Ride it like you stole it! And never look back! They are too far behind to see!
