Shift Patterns...Still cant get over it!

I was reading some old posts abut shift patterns and i cannot get over the fact that my 200es was a diffrent shift pattern to everyone elses on the board. I said the parts 200es motor i had was neutral down 5 up. Its not i made a mistake. The parts motor i still have sitting in my garage is 5th all the way down and neutral all the way up.

Ok, now the 200es that i was riding when i had it (its sold now) was neutral all the way down and 5th all the way up. That is:

    - 5th
    - 4th
    - 3rd
    - 2nd
    - 1st
    - neutral

Some of the guys on here said that their pattern was completely opposite to this. I am COMPLETELY sure my 200es was neutral all the the way down! No doubt about it. I am also sure my parts motor is neutral all the way up.

My 250es has its neutral all the way down also, not including reverse. What is everyone elses 250es shift pattern?

Anyway does anyone have any explanation to why my old 200es had a diffrent shift pattern to everyone elses?

    Thanks,

    Matt

    Hey Matt,

My 85 250es is neutral all the way down also. Dunno why you have two different shift patterns on the same motor unless someone put one together backwards? (just a thought)...

for 250R's its first is all the way down, nutrel is inbetween first and second (very first click up, pretty much like half a click) then all the rest are up .. so starting from bottom to top it goes 1-N-2-3-4-5-6 , 350x is the same way last time i rode one.
Give me no lip and I tell you no lie.

ATCmatt, maybe your 200es motor is mounted upside down.

The older honda trikes had neutral at the top, and the gears went down. It was bass ackwards from a motorcycle (plus neutral was not between 1st and 2nd). Then they changed to neutral being at the bottom, and the gears going up. this is for the auto clutch trikes. the clutch trikes were like cycles, with 1st at the bottom, and neutral between 1st and 2nd

My 125m's are both neutral all the way up, and my 250SX is nuetral all the way down (not counting reverse). Both models are clutchless.

Totally confusing when I first got the 250SX. I've gotten used to shifting either way and can usually switch back and forth without too much confusion.

The 1 down, 5 up pattern is exclusive to six speed trannys; not including reverse, auto clutch has nothing to do with it. but most auto- clutch performance models have reverse which eliminates room for a sixth gear.
    The below sentence is TRUE.

Maybe my shift pattern was diffrent because it was in fact a 1985 atc200es superred. Yes thats right a 1985 200es. The motor was out of the 85 200es i had with the rusted out frame. I then took it out of the trailprotrailprotrailprotrailpro frame and put it in the 84 frame which was good.

Do you think this may be the reason?

I sure dont like the idea of 5th being all the way down

Hi Matt, My 200es (1984 model) has the same gears as yours did, and the 200e (1982 model) scrap mule has a locked motor but will try to free it up to see what gears that has. I am glad Name Brand can get use to hopping of one bike to another, for when I change over I almost brake my neck, but that comes with older age and the CRAFT disease. Cant Remember a Frigging Thing! I have had 4 or 5 atc110's over the years, I think everytime we got a new one the shift pattern was opposite each other...All 250r's, 350x's and 200x's I have encountered have the 1st down, neutral up a click then the rest up..My '85 250sx and the two 85 bigred 250's have been R N 12345....My 200s is N all the way down, but my 200m (which is pretty much the same motor) have N on the top side..

Go figure I think Honda just likes keeping us on our toes....

My ALT125 is the worst. Neutral, 1 up, 4 down, autoclutch. Nothing like going up a steep hill, feeling it bog, and knowing you cant pull off a double shift up downshift.

I know this is an old thread, but a I accuired what is apparently a 200m motor, 1985, and the shift pattern is opposite of the 1982 185s motor that I have. so what i'm trying to figure out is, there are two different shift patterns depending on year? is this true. don't want to split the cases again if I don't have to, and can you assemble the whole thing wrong so it does shift opposite or is that a joke.
