Smile New to the Forum, sharing my ATC500R and introducing myself

Just a few weeks ago I started seraching online about 3 wheeler info. I bought my first 3 wheeler an 86 ATC250R about 5 years ago when I was only 16. I've been reading the posts on here w/ Dean Kirsten(oldfart) and it's really inspired me to get my newest 3 wheeler up on these forums. I love three wheelers and these forums have really inspired me to get out there and start restoring. Although, I may not have the budget for it right now but I will sooner than later.

Anyway, I only have one three wheeler right now but its in interesting one. I have a feeling it may have been featured in one of the mags back in the day but who knows. Maybe you guys will.... Hopefully you will find it somewhat interesting at the least.

Its a custom ATC500R built by Pro Design and maybe this guy Dallas Baker probably between the mid to late 80's. I'm guessing this because the green sticker on it is good until June of 91. You need a green sticker to ride legally in the Dunes aparently. I'm assuming the sticker was good for a few years before it expired. I found this trike when I used to live out in San Diego. It was an ad in the local San Diego Tribune I think for an ATC500R. I called the guy as soon as I seen it and ran over to purchase it. It turns out this guy was friends with the Pro Design family or related somehow and he aquired it. Some parts on this thing are absolutly amazing, you can tell Pro Design or Dallas Baker knew what they were doing when they built this thing. The guy I bought it from really had no useful information about it. He went to the dunes with it a long time ago he said and aparently the throttle stuck wide open in 4th or 5th gear and scared the crap out of him; he wouldn't get on it again. He owned a wicked 440(maybe) Banshee too, so you know this thing is no joke. The only thing he knew is that I had to run VP Race gas in it, the red stuff.

Anyway, I've always thought this trike may have made it in one of the magazines back in the day so I thought I would get some pictures up for everyone to look at and see if anyone has any info on it. Probably not, but who knows.

It says Dallas Baker Products on the radiator shrouds. I took it out to Glamis once, and one guy commented on that. Who is Dallas Baker?

Sorry, I know its a super huge picture. So the others I will put as a hyperlink so the post doesn't take forever to load.

A nice shot of the rear. It uses a lot of parts from a Kawi Tecate. Front and rear brakes, possibly the rear plastics?, front forks, etc. I have no clue what the rear axle is from. It looks aftermarket, its super thick. The rear plastics are cut a lot, can anyone tell what they're from?

You can see the swing arm in this shot. This thing is amazing. I don't even know if its a one off or what. Anyone know? This thing is a work of art if you ask me.

This is a shot of the Jug, it says "Pro Design 4 Power - DB(it could say JB or TB)" I'm guessing Dallas Baker's initials.

    Nice side shot

Here you can see the rear brake setup. Very well done. Oh, this bike uses the 86 or maybe 85 CR500 frame. Pretty cool right.

A better shot of the rear brake lever setup. Maybe i'm getting too detailed here, oh well..

Anyway, thats it for now. Anyone seen this thing before. It seems to have been ridden a good amout in its day. It does need new fork seals and the rear shock is no good. I ride it every once in a blue moon in local fields. You can sit on the gas tank and pull power wheelies no problem. This thing is extremely FAST.

If anyone is in my area and wants to check it out some time let me know. Also, I have a buddy who is in the middle of parting out an 85 ATC250R. Let me know if anyone needs anything. Not too much is left, frame, front end, the motor and rear end are gone. Some random stuff is left like Radiators, AC skid plate, box of all the bolts, and some more stuff I can't remember. While i'm at it I really need a kick starter and clutch parts for an 89 quadracer 250. I need to get it running so I can sell it and buy another trike... hopefully! Thats it for now. Hopefully I get some good feedback from you guys. I've seen some wicked trikes I never even imagined existed in the last few weeks since I started researching 3 wheelers online. Hopefully, this one will add to the list for you guys.

    Take care,

    Dan Chase

PS Sorry again for the huge pictures. I don't have any programs on this cpu to resize it.

I agree with Smokin, killer ride you have there! I'd be interested in having a good picture of the tripple clamps and see what they look like.

AWSOME R!!! Good luck w/ it!
It looks like it has a 86/87 Tecate carrior in it. I think it uses a Tecate brake rotor as well. NEED MORE PICTURES!! LOL

Mike aren't the seat and rear fenders Tecate too? I'm almost positive the seat is 86-87 after seeing Virgil's at TF.

That thing is sweet! Yes thats a later T3 seat. I dont think the rear fenders are from a tecate unless they were cut at the back. They look more Tiger like to me. Looks like a real blast to ride. Major roost anyone?

Nice, here are some more pics of the triple clamps for Honda ATC.

I did some more looking at the newest Teacte, I guess 86-87 and I did come to the conclusion that thats where the fenders and seat came from. The plastic is cut on the back to provide clearence for the grab bar.

Anyone have any idea what these forks are from? I had always assumed the Tecate but I really have no clue. It was wierd, when I bought the bike the forks were put on backwards so the caliper was facing forward. I switched it around, but I never understood why they would do that. Whoever built it knew what they were doing obviously, anyone have any idea? Flipped around it would have a shorter wheelbase, why would they want that, who knows. Anyone have an idea on the forks?

DChase, those forks were designed to be "leading axle", since the brake caliper is mounted behind the forks where it is protected from rocks & debris. I'm guessing the forks were mounted to the bike in a "trailing axle" configuration, since that's how most trikes have them mounted. The only trikes, that I can think of, that come with leading axle forks are the 350X & Tecates. As far as what the forks came off of, I would guess that they are CR500 units.

Thanks for the pictures of the clamps DChase. The tripples seem to be custom units made from steel plate and tubing, an interesting route to take vs billet aluminum.

I will concur with Red Rider on the forks, They appear to be from about 86-87. In 89 they went to inverted forks which are standard on all present day motocross bikes.

    Cool trike.
