Tri-z Identification and value help

I just bought another 86 250r from a friend and he asked me if I was interested in another yamaha 3 wheeler. Not being a big yamaha fan I thought I would at least check it out. He takes me out to this heated pole barn and uncovers a mint black and yellow tri-z, this thing looks like it has maybe 10 to 20 hours on it, its all original, has all the decals, tools, original tires with the lines still on them. No wear marks on the frame, front and rear disc have no grooves, zero scratches on the plastic, the transmission shifted like a brand new motor would. I have never seen a bike this clean. I need to know what year it is and what its worth, also what should I be looking for with this machine. Here is the frame number JY338W00XFC005368. I am going back later today to get pics and put a deposit on this machine, any help would be apreciated.

Here is the key for Yamaha year dating. I got this from a Yamaha ATV site. (They changed the alpha character to a numeric number in 2001. 1=2001, 2=2002 etc).

You are looking at an 85 model. Sounds great too. There can't be too many barns around the world that haven't been tapped for treasure like this now! I'd grab it.

$1500, is that all they are worth in that shape? I was thinking about buying it and making it mint but if thats all they are worth its not worth it to me.

The Tri-Z's dont seem to have quite the same cult following the ATC250R does. When I said $1500 easily, I mean that a bumb on the side of the street shouldn't feel bad about giving you that for it.

Thanks, I see what you mean, its really to bad. I might have to list it and see what kind of price it brings for the guy. He wants a trx 250r really bad and wanted to trade me for one of mine but if thats all they are worth then I will have to pass on the deal.

whats sad is... determining what bikes you want, by how much profit you can make out of it. Thats a damn nice machine, to bad it'll probably go to someone who will just tear it to pieces.

That sure hell is a clean one Jim! '85 models don't seem to bring as much as the '86's as they have the 6 speed transmissons. How much was he/you looking as a price for this machine?

Sorry man but I have never owned a yamaha tri-z, they are just not my kind of machine. Yes I do determine what bikes I want by price and profit margin, what exactly is wrong with that? I believe its called good business. I now own 7 250r's all in different stages and I have never sold a single part off any of them and probably never will. I use these other bikes I find that I am not interested in keeping to use to help pay to build my 250r's. I really hope it goes to someone who will apreciate it and keep it in the same condition or better.

He wanted one of my trx's as a trade, he never told me a price until I told him I couldn't do a trade. He asked what I would give for it and I told him so much and he said to come pick it up. I am not going to set a price until after it goes through ebay with a high reserve. I will have it up on ebay later today.

You definetly came accross a nice Z. A needle in a haystack to say the least. It is hard to say what it will bring. They definetly don't bring what the Honda 250Rs do. I just traded 3 TRI-Zs for a TRX 250R. One of them I just rebuilt from the frame up and the other 2 were just average bikes. My R is worth about 3800-4000 real money. I was told it has about 10k invested in it though. Some of the Zs will bring in the neighborhood of $2k+ and some don't bring crap. I would figure $1500-2000 is probably a good guess of the value. It is pretty much worth what someone is willing to pay for it.
