I'm thinking about getting an 83 250r. For starters I've never even driven a manual clutch atv of anykind, but I'm not worried about that as I'm sure I can learn. I'm just wondering what you all think about the 83 250r's. Mainly is there any certain things that I should check/look for?

You would be surprised at the power an aircooled R has. I suggest you be careful since it would be your first time with a manual clutch.

Yeah, I can all ready see my demise. The fastest thing I've ridden so far is a 250ex. But alas, I'm 22 and I've always wanted a sporty 3 wheeler. I figure the longer I wait the harder it's going to become to find a decent one. And I spose I'll have to mix the gas?, or do they have injectors?

you will have to mix the gas. its funny, the first clutch ive driven was a old CR 65 and boy did that thing surprise me, ended up in a ditch...wasnt the clutch that got me rather it was the twist throttle lol. But you learn, I'm 19 now and have driven my older cousins Yamaha FZ1000 sport bike...200kph is how fast i got the thing to go and whats crazy is that it wanted to do more...it was pulling my arms at 200kph!

Make sure theres no oil leaking from the case or the engine.check the axal bushings and make sure your ride it thru all 5 gears..

I just read a post on another site that says an 83 250r has a rather slow top end speed, comparable to that of a 200s. Is that true? What kind of top end speed is an 83 capable of?

any 250R will demolish a 200S and will have a higher top speed in less the 200S is modded to the hill and then maybe it might win.A aircooled R will probley do around 60mph or so.(just a guess)

Theres no way a 200s will beat a 83 250r, anywhere. I'd still bet on the 250R even if all three tires were flat.

I didn't think that sounded right, but I thought I'd ask the experts. This will be my first 2 stroke atv so I just have a few more questions and then I'll shut up. Am I going to be able to ride it in the winter,(in other words are 2 strokes really touchy with the air temp)? Also, since it's air cooled, how easy would it over heat? And last but not least, how often am I going to have to rebuild the top end? Thank you all for any info, I really appreciate it.

i had a 84 r and a 85 r myself i liked the 84 which is also aircooled much better than the 85 but dont take it wrong the 85 is awesome to

You will be able to ride when its cold. There is a lot of members on her that ride 2 -strokes in about -30 degrees, so you should be fine! It is an air cooler, it will overheat , but as long as you shut it off and let it cool every once and awhile, it will be fine. It is up to you how often you rebuild the top end, some people change it every year, some replace it when the compression is low, I ride it till it won't start!( I do take good care of my bikes FYI , I just don't replace top ends too often.)

That's cool that I can ride in the winter. Do you usually have to re jet or anything when it gets colder? When I say cold, I mean really really cold. Last winter I went riding almost every night with an equally crazy friend of mine. We'd switch off between riding either my 250ex, my atc200 or my 84 big red. One night in jan. I checked the thermo before I left the house at about 1 am and it was -42. That's farenheit. Burrrrr. Well, even though I really should be spending my money on other things I think (if it's in good shape of course) I'm going to buy that 83 250r. I'm going tomorrow to check it out. This guy wants 800 for it, and when I talked to him on the phone he said it's a solid machine. Yeah well we'll see.
