Are you soaking the clutches in oil before you put them in? I always let mine soak in oil overnight.

Check the clutch freeplay as well. If it's too tight, the disks will just slip and burn up.
Are you replacing the springs when you put in new plates? If not, that may be why the clutch does not work for long.
