how do you check the timing

I cant find a cheap repair manual any where so I'm asking yall again. my new project 85 350x will not rev up it will idle fine but when you slowly apply the throttle it will die at about 1/2 throttle I have moved the needle clip through all of the positions it has. I also have adjusted the valves at TDC and the only thing I can think it is is the timing has slipped. It looks alot different than checking the timing on the 200x. It has a 138 main jet and a 42 piolit in it and the air screw is set at 2 turns out. what do your 350x's have in them for jets and do you have any suggestions to what it might be? how do you check the timing without a timing light :?:

    thanks again,

I have an 86 350x and your jet sizes are right on. To check the timing, pull the plug out of the left side and line up TDC. Take the valve cover caps off and make sure there's slack in the rocker arms and the lobes aren't contacting the rocker arms. Do you know if the motor has been apart and possibly the cam was installed out of time? If you think it hasn't and the cam lobes don't contact the rockers when at TDC, then its probably ok. If you think the cam's been messed with, then you you'll have to pull the top of the head off and check the timing mark on the cam sprocket to make sure its aligned at TDC. Not sure if the mark is up or down, usually vertical either way. When the lobes aren't contacting is where it should be. If you do get a timing light the specs are 10degrees initial advance BTDC and 30 degrees BTDC full advance. Also my friends 350x had a cutting out problem when going above half throttle. Turned out to be the plastic floats were derformed causing to low a fuel level.

Your bike would not be running if the timing was off. Sounds to me like the carb needs to be cleaned, as well as the fuel shut off valve, AND adjust the valves. If it still will not run right, then I would move on to the timing.

a motor will run if the timing is off to a degree.....but i agree that it sounds like a carb problem
