doing a 200x top end need help

My 200x is getting a new top end on its first bore. what I want to know is how do I set the timing when I put it back together..?? do I need an special tool?. Also I did some riding without my exhuast on so how can I make sure the exhuast valve is still good?. I mean it looks ok (little cruddy) and I shined a flashlight on the bottom to see if i could see any light showing through in the exhuast port. (I didnt see any). any suggestions?

    hmmm..

Well i can tell you how to set the timing. First thing is to take the peep hole cover off the stator cover so you can see the marks on the flywheel. Then rotate engine until the letter T is lined up with the groove on the stator cover. Now comes the tricky part. Loosen the cam chain up and put the camshaft into place with the lobes facing down. The bolts should be vertical and a circle on the cam gear should be lined up with a a notch on the rocker cover. After you get all that installed you have to make line up the CDI with the F mark on the flywheel which is done pretty much the same way only you are looking at a line on the pick up thing ( Black box that is stationary). AND for the exhaust valve I would go ahead and take it out and look at it before you get it all back together and find out if it is burnt. Good luck!

If you are getting a new top end meaning a new piston, rings & wristpin then you should take the opportunity to have a valve job while it is apart. It will be money well spent, expecially if it has never been done before.

I would stay away from running without the exhaust attached. That will speed up the burning of the exhaust valve.

    valve job

take it to a machine shop and they will regrind the valve seats. Here in Ohio I had just 1 valve seat ground and it costed around 20 or so bucks so your looking around 50 chucks maybe.

Check with Ritter Cycle Racing (they advertise in the back of Dirtwheels) they did my 200x valves and did a nice job. $50. A little slow but solid.
