    Exclamation 200s running probs

well my friend has this 84' 200s he got for 100$ it starts easy and runs good with the choke all the way on we have to drive it with the choke on untill you hit 3rd gear and ya pop it down to 4th..well it idels really high with the choke off...iv tried leaning it up with the slider needle..and adjusting and readjusting the screws and every thing many time. the trike burns oil..has an amazing amount of torque for a 200 and go's like the wind except that it idles waay 2 high..we'v done every thing at this point but put a smaller main jet in...we even replaced the top half of the carb housein nothin seems to work we'v got it running better than when he got it but it still has problems..the plug is sutty black after running it and i cant for the life of me get it to burn white from all the oil it burns..we can tell its been rebuilt befor from the silicon on the base gasket(if it even has one) so was thinking someone along the way put a diffrnt piston in it or something...we plan on rebuilding it this winter put new rings in..but dose anyone have any suggestions or oppinoins any thing would help thanks

Yet another person waylaid with the infamous ATC200S "carb" problem. Having to run it with the carb on choke indicates - yes - a fuel problem. Most people, including myself, think the 185/200 series carbs were junk that just plain "wore out". But after some enlightening conversations in the past with TimSr. , he's pretty much convinced me that carbs simply just don't "wear out". His point usually is the fact that carb circuits can't wear away because gasoline isn't an abrasive - its that simple. Someone poking around the carefully metered circuits and - gulp - the pilot and mainjets with a metal object can and will, however, wear or ruin a carb. Things like dirt, varnish, gum can block ports and circuits - but that can always be cleaned. Yes - floats and needle valves, slides, choke levers and linkages can and do wear out, but - they are mechanical devices that are supposed to wear. Now, that being said - It sounds to me like there is no carb problem - but - you have an air leak somewhere in the intake tract, past the carb and you are running lean. You are having to run it with the choke on because you are making up for the increased air in the fuel mixture by "turning on" the enrichening circuit. Do the usual test of while the engine is running, spray some ether around the intake manafold - if the motor revs, leak found. You are right in the fact that a standard "plug" test won't work for problem solving - the "burning" oil is going to hinder that to the point of useless.
