    Picked up 81 Honda 200

I just picked up a not running Honda 200. It will be me and my Dads first project and I have a couple of questions. It is not running right now...no spark and that is something I knew I would have to work on but also the shift lever does not take the bike out of neutral....any ideas what that problem could be? The top end seems to have lots of commpression when you pull the starter and the body is in good shape and it came with almost a complete parts motor....all for $200. Its going to be a real learning experience anyway. Thanks to everyone for answers to my previous posts as well.

the shift lever may have stripped splines or could just be loose check to see if the bolts loose and if not try taking the lever off the shaft and if the splines are shot you may be able to use a small fill to fix them up or you coulod always weld the lever on,either way if you want it in neutral vise grips will work also the firing could be somthing easing, might not even be bad parts i know my old 110 wasn't firing cause of the timing..

Not sure which model it is..I am guessing the 200atc as well. Well the shift selector will not budge even with vice grips but if it is serious I have another bottom end complete that seems to be in decent shape. The good news is I do have some spark..not much but some. Any ideas where to begin with the shifter?

i'm not 100% sure but it could be a bent shift fork i know there are guys on this site that will be able to tell you the exact problem just have to wait for one of them to come accross your post, but i'd say it's probally a good thing you have a spare bottom end just in case yours is a serious mess also i'd get the spare looked at before you use it just incase it needs a little work you'll save money in the long run making sure all parts are good before you get the whole engine back together..

my suggestion is to get a service manuel from riverside or scona or some bike dealership in the city..most of the time riverside honda has them in stock for the trikes and it will make it much easir and more fun to fix if you know what your are dooing to some extent :P

I do plan on getting a manual as soon as I get some cash...right now it will have to wait. I am in no hurry to get this one running (sort of) as it was bought as a project and I plan on using it to learn. That being said I couldn't help but go out to the garage and piss around with it. There is a spark but after I tried to start it a few times the spark was full of gas and there was gas blowing out of the cylinder when I tried to test the plug. I imagine this is somewhat normal??? What would be you're first step if you where me? I would really like to get it running even if it runs like crap before I start worrying about getting it tip top. Could it still be an ingnition problem even with spark? Thanks again for all the replies.

PS I did get a general manual from the library but the trouble shooting advice in it is minimal.

well if it has spark even if its weak...take the carb off clean it out with some varsol or carb cleaner...then put it on put the plug in and start pulling..
if it dosent start then i would suggest getting a new coil..there about 50-100$ not exactly shure for that model..but if you want some parts diagrams i would suggest going to www.bikebandit.com and looking in the oem parts they have all kinds of diagrams same with www.partsfish.com so you can pice togeather what go's where
