now i have my sensible head back on can you guys tell me how many of you ride trikes on the road as daily transport or even at weekends.

i ask cause most threads here seem to be about off-road types.

3 wheelers are NOT street legal. ANy vehicle can be made street legal by adding DOT Approved Tires, a Tail/Brake Light, some states require lighted blinkers (others youc na sue your hands) and a spark arrested exhaust.

Anyone who goes riding around the roads deserves whatever they get. Not only is it dangerous and illegal but its very annoying to the -legal- motorists.

do you mean atc type 3-wheelers :? cause over here we have a huge amount of trikes on the roads and they are perfectly legal.

hmmm.

"ATC" type of 3 wheelers as you call them.......Honda, Kawi, Suzuki, Yamaha, KTM, Tiger.......not one of thsoe companies ever made a 3 wheeler for the street. This site and board is about Offroad ATV's liek those. In fact.....No quad has even been made by the large companies other than Artic Cat as a street legal machine formt he factory. Even that one is still in its testing stages if im not mistaken.

the trikes i'm talking about are the ones that guys have built themselves using either a bike engine or car engine in a custom built frame, please tell me you guys are joking about not seeing trikes on the road,

if you are still in any doubt just go to google and search images of "trike" to get the picture.

Guys have been making three wheeled street rods for years, and they are street legal in Ohio. As a matter of fact, Ohio license requires a separate motorcycle endorsenment (M), and a different endorsement (R) for "three wheeled motorcycles". These were usually something like a VW rear with Motorcycle forks, but often the were motorcycle motor powered.

When I lived in Ca. in the mid 80's, the California Highway patrol ran 3 wheeled Honda motorcycles, designed for the street. maybe you Ca. guys will know if they still use them?

Also in Ohio, ATV's, without street modifications may be ridden on secondary roads, provided they have a state registration sticker, and liability insurance. (most people here have neither)


Be VERY careful about stating what is legal or illegal, because all of the street/highway/license/registration laws are designated by each individual state. Was is illegal in your state, may be legal in others. Whne makind legal statements, be sure to mention in what state you are talking about.

I stated very specifically it is illegal to ride any 3 wheeled all terrain vehicle made on the road. And yes it is. We were never discussing "legalizing" them. They certainly dont come that way new....or ive been missing something these last couple years. I was also talking about the USA, I later on my 2nd reply noticed he was from Scotland. I was referring the US Highway and Road Laws.

I think this site should be open to all 3 wheeled vehicles, and I believe it is. MOST of the 3 wheelers we talk about o nhere are the offraod types. In most of the 50 states you CANNOT by law, make an ATV or ATC street legal, however you can make dirt bike legal. I'm sure if they're custom made in your home you could make it street legal. There was one in Dirt wheels not to long ago. I would not want a solid axled motorcycle/bike to drive on the road, I'd much rather have a 2 wheeled vehicle, or open axled 4 wheeler. But a street legal 3 wheeler is very cool.

please view monster needs new home. trike has cb750 engine, and title. with dot tires, lights, and insurance, it can do it.

texas law pretty much states that if it has brake lights ,tail and headlights, horn ,good brakes, street tires it can be licesced. if the machine is not capable of withstanding a safe speed of 70mph i will be issued a restricted license. my grandma who had here license taken away has a permit and a streetlegal golfcart she drives to the grocery store. she is only permited to drive back in forth.( about 1/4 mile down a dirt rode) but it is perfectly legal. i do not know about other states.

Reread my post! It is NOT illegal according to "US law" because there are no US laws pertaining to ATV's ON THE STREET. The US governement doesnt even have the jurisdiction to regulate Intertate Highways. They can only threaten states with federal funds being withheld. These are STATE LAWS. In Ohio it IS LEGAL to ride ATV's, (3 wheelers ARE ATV's) on secondary ROADS if certain conditions I mentioned are met. Ohio defines a secondary road so vaguely that its covers almost anything but a state route or an interstate. Yes, In Ohio could get a state sticker, liability insurance, and legally make weekly trips to the grocery store on my TriZ.
