    switched from a 85 to a 86 250r frame, what a difference

I snapped my 85 atc frame and yesterday swapped it to a 86 frame, its like a new bike, I didn't change anything except the frame, the front wheel is more planted, jumps better, didn't expeirence the full difference yet, bacause I'm still using 86 trx 250r peg mounts, they will be changed to 86 atc mounts(I have roll design pegs and they fit in the 86 atc and 86/87 trx's), that should drop the peg height about 1 1/2 inches, for a better ride. never realized how 1/2 degree of camber could make a difference. also I didn't have to grind my frame to fit the cr ingition in, and on the 86 did they drop the height of the motor? compared to how my 85 was it seams as the motor is lower. I got a line today about a 86 atc frame and front end for free(he took the motor and rear end off and left the rest), so I'm gonna powdercoat that, and put on my +1 lsr swinger and build myself another bike around that. How much better are the 86 forks? the 86 forks I have need to be rebuilt, worth the money to rebuild them or use my 85 forks?

I thought the only difference was the way the tail light mounted, could be wrong though.

there is a difference, the 86 forks need more oil than the 85, peg mounts are different and so are the pegs, the 86 frame seams stronger in some places and less meat in other places. It seams like the bike sits lower, all I changed was the frame, everyting else stayed the same. the 85 and 86 use different bolts for the rear suspension linkage as well as different bushings, the motor mount on the swingarm is thicker on the 85, as we all know the swingarm is different. something is different on the 85 and 86 frame also, on the 85 the back bolt thread for the tank is much thicker as is the front, the 86 its skinny. the bike handles way different. I'm sure if I really looked I could find more differences. the frame on the 86 is longer, my 86 is about 1"-1 1/2 longer, I can measure this from how much room I have from the bike to tailgate.

Camber? I think you mean "RAKE", the angle the front forks sit out from the frame @. I didn't know there was a difference though. & as far as the swinger I think the only diff was how the carriers fit not the swing bolt connection, cause I was gonna transfer my 85 WestCoast onto a TRX if I ever get one.

Death, you say you snapped your 85 frame. I know these frames just don't break. I'm assuming you've been riding around on a cracked 85 frame for quite awhile, and that's why the 86 frame seems to handle & feel better. Other than a few minor changes to the frame, which have already been discussed here, none are specification changes that would drastically improve handling, except maybe the swingarm.

it broke on the left engine cradle rail, it could be repaired, without much trouble. right above the left front motor mount, found a crack in one of the bottom motor mount hole, but didn't find any other cracks. I always looked over my frame after I washed it. I didn't wash the bike the time before I rode it before it broke(track was very dry) I already had the peg area repaired and the left front motor mount was starting to crack(got repaired). I had a trx250r and know the areas to look for cracks. I was told that atc frames like to crack right where the two cradles meet, foot peg area(same as trx), rear shock mount, any others? if anybody wants the frame they can have it, I certinally don't want it. Don't have room for it, my storage is filled, garage filled, basement has atc and trx parts as well as tecate parts. Also I have a 88r being built, 86 200x, 86 200x motor(gonna put a new head on it), 01 xr250r(long story, short=mechanic ran away with my parts), and the 86 atc 250r(formally 85), plus tires, plastics(trx), new works shock for 86 200x, paddles, partial short track kit, and all the stock xr 250 parts, 3-4 sets of radiators, a complete 86 250r motor(bad cases and c/b), 84 250r front end(was for 86 200x), and probably more if looked. forgot also I have a 86 trx 250r frame and related parts.

i didnt say there was NO differences at all, i just meant the bare frame, wich i think everyone else meant also., and in the frame case, there is no difference, maybe the tailight mount like the other guy said, other then that, i'm not away of any, but i do know the frontend didnt change on the FRAMES., let me re-read this artical introducing the 86 R (they list all the changes), although i've read it before and they dont mention anything frame-wise.

Mine cracked in the square tube section ABOVE where the engine cradles meet. Between the radiators. By the time I noticed it, it was completely through and separated and the motor was holding the whole trike together via the top motor mount. I welded plates over top of the cracked area and haven't had any more trouble.

good thread deathnam53, i ride BOTH alot,,,, same tires the 85 has a little more power,, but its funny how you get a weird suprize once in a while on the 86 ,,,, they DO handle different ,,, i have a practice track i ride for conditioning ,,, so i ride both trikes ,, so i don't wear one out ,,,, and on most days its the same but once in a while without looking you can tell what trike i am on,,,,, say BS or whatever ,,, the 86 is different and better,,,,
