    Oil in the stator housing

First I would like to say this is a really cool forum, I've lurked around and found all kinds of usefull info. Thanks to all!! Long story short, I have an "84 atc200es that at first would not start ( no spark). After troubleshooting everything I found the problem when I pulled the stator coil cover and drained about a quart of milky engine oil out of the stsator housing. After cleaning and reassembling it fired right up.
My question is this, Does the stator housing suppose to have oil in it? Thanks again!
