    cons of straight pipe

I have been hearing mixed answers on the cons of a straight pipe.
Some people tell me it can damage your valves but it seems to me that running it open header there would be less heat on the valve because of less resistence and backpressure.
    Any ideas?

It CAN hurt your valves, but thats why you have to re-jet. If you don't, you will foul plugs and risk burning your valves. Running a straight pipe will not run cooler like your talking about. It will run lean (not enough fuel). The carb. is tuned to run with the factory pipe and airbox and filter. When you throw on a drag pipe, it flows alot more, but, you won't get the fuel you need, and it will run like trailprotrailprotrailprotrailpro. I say go for it, make sure you re-jet, and put on a high flow filter while your at it.

I would not install a strait pipe, it's going to sound like a loud pice of crap IMO and your not going to see any substantial gain, it's also going to make anyone near you very upset because of the noise. This is one of the reasons why there are so many anti-atv people out there and no place to ride. JMO

well it really depends on what kinda at u got..for example u will notice a gain in power on a 185s..i have one and i should know..it does foul plugs also if you dont re-jet..i know that 2..lol..yes it does piss off the neighbors but i live in the country and not 2 many people give a trailprotrailprotrailprotrailpro unless its like really late at night or early in the morning..which is why im saving for a dg rcm exhaust! it can and most likely will hurt your valves also if you dont re jet..mine fouls plugs really quick because i have no airbox so its getting alot more air and no filter..hmmm..lol its a pos but im workin on it..i just bought a new jet for mine i suggest if you do it then rejet

thanks for all the info. I will probably just put the silencer back on because in my neigborhood the houses are packed in not an empty lot. I get alot of mean stares when I run it down the road wide open with no silencer. but **edited** them i dont like living there anyway.

    cons
    1 LOUD
    2 valve damage
3 it will sound like crap. an engine running through a straight pipe wont sound as nice as a regular performance exhaust because you hear all the motor noise that is normally filtered out by a silencer.

Anyone know anything about Yamaha TT500's? I have 3 of them. Do a search on ebay or anywhere else on the net. Half of them will have straight pipes. It makes these bikes totally rip. Everyone runs an open down pipe on them. If the pipe is long enough it won't hurt the valves. When you let of the gas during engine braking there is air actually being sucked into the exhaust the the cold air hitting the exhaust valve can burn/warp it. If your straight pipe is long enough the air will be warm by the time it gets to the valve.
