Question of the Day? ATC speedo options.

Ok guys. I have been digging for a few weeks now trying to gather info and options of speedos for my 350x and 87 BigRed. Ok. Looks like you definately have to have the piece that mounts to the front axle. No question on that. But the rest of the stuff, cable and speedo unit is where the true question lies. All the cables seem to be the same. Length of the cables varies obviously. Could I get any (basic) honda head unit (speedo) and the proper cable, and hook it to the correct axle mounted piece. I seem to have found one that appears to have been done that way. Will it work? Anyone else done it? These basic speedos have to be set up the same. I know that the axle mounted piece it the part thats calibrated for the application. What do you know?

I believe you are correct in that any speedo can be used. The gear box is what is unique and special. I think all honda moto speedos were calibrated for the same cable speed.

Thats what I think too. Even if I could find a piece that wasnt calibrated just right. (the part on the axle) I could determine how off it really was if any.

Hi i used a atc110 gearbox, trx 300 cable, trx speedo...on my 200x it all works fine...the calibration is in the gearbox/and size of the front tire... althrough i'm using a 110 gearbox ....is reads true-ish....i have tested it by runnig a new trx350 with built in factory speedo.....they read the same...or maybe 2mph out at top speed...
    hope this helps

You can still get the OEM speedo from HONDA... there's a seller on ebay that sells cables. Now, as a math teacher, the calibration part would be ~5% off since C=pi*d and the difference in tire size is 22" and 23½" ( A 22" box on a 350X would read slow, a 350X gearbox on a 110/185/200 would read faster than actual)

Copy that Bruce & John. See the thing is I know where I can get a Factory Speedo. But its $75. Kinda steep for just the speedo. There are other honda speedos that go for way less than that on Ebay everyday. I could have gotten one today for $10 plus shipping. Why pay an inflated price for a factory ATC one when one off another type bike will work. Thats what I have been working on. And my wondering has been about.

Not sure what part number you were using John, but the price looked correct. It doesn't say "ATC" on it, but it was the same Part number that was on my 350X speedo, but model VM4 instead of HA5. Came up as "ATV Speedometer" as a description. My speedo doesn't say "atc" on it either which bothered me until I saw a 85 Hondaline ad of a 350X with the speedo and it didn't say ATC either!

A point about front tire-driven speedos for ATCs. When Honda first released the ATC250R, they came out with a Hondaline kit to adapt a speedo/odometer. Well, Team Honda ATC had this great idea to install one on Dean Sundahl's ATC for the Baja (500). So, Sundahl goes out and runs the wheels off that ATC, and when the race was over, they checked the mileage. Guess what? Going by the official SCORE map, either Dean short-cutted 160 miles off the course, or the front wheel was OFF THE GROUND 1/3 OF THE TIME! Just FYI.

Is the Factory Black face with the ATC symbol still availible? Or are you talking about the black and orange generic ones?

HONDA ATC ones are only available on ebay or in old dealer inventory if you can find an old school dealer. The "orange" ones are still available from Honda... about $50 at ServiceHonda.com

Well I found out that the CB 350 drive unit would work with the ATC but you have to rig that "tip" piece on it. Second, is the speedo would be off due to the size tire of the CB 350 vs the ATC's. I have also used the cable from the CB 350 and it works great but its just a bit too long.
