    Exclamation Big Red Backfire

My 83 Big Red does small backfires only when decelerating like when going down a hill. I though it might be the carb so I sprayed carb cleaner and it didn’t help any. I was thinking it might be the timing but I don’t know how to change the timing. I use my trike for hunting and the backfires tend to scare the elk and deer. Here in Washington it gets dry in the summer even though I have a spark arrestor I don’t wanna start the next forest fire. Any help would be much appreciated.

Don't know what to tell ya. Every trike I have ever owned backfired, and my SXs, if I run them hard, backfire when I shut them off.

    Play with your throttle needle.

Move the e-clip up and down untill you find that happy medium.

My 200s does the same thing, but mine is because i have an after market needle and it's not quite the same size as the stock needle.
If you can't fix it with a , its an electrical problem.

85 ATC 200s--Ratted out and not running at the moment

86 ATC 200x--All stock other than the handle bars

85 ATC 250es Big Red -- Just got new rubbers and she wants to ride!!

04 Suzuki LTZ250 quadsport - It was a decent price and I'm a raging idiot.

Backfires are "usually" caused by air leaks in the exhaust or the intake system. Check all exhaust joints from the cylinder head back to the muffler.
Also check the intake boot from the carb to the head. Try a propane torch around the intake {without lighting it of course} if the engine speeds up you have an intake leak.

I think broook is right. My 185s was backfiring like crazy. It turned out that the intake had a very small crack in the side if it in the rubber. I put a "new to me" one on it and it went away.
