    Question 83/84r mod ?'s

was thinkin about sellin my r but for now i guess i'll keep it. today i went out riding being the weather was nice and after awhile of riding i heard weird noise commin outta the left side of the head. came home and found out i blew out the head gasket. I looked at my parts r and it is bored .25 over and it had a 85r carb with it but one jet is messed up so im gonna replace the jet and put it on my r. being i prob won't get around to changing it for awhile could you guys tell me what mods i could do to it to make it atleast keep up with the newer quads. as of right now its all stock other than 1 tooth bigger front sprocket. i don't really have a budget so any ideas would be great.

Lots of mods for it. Your on the right track with the 85 carb. Along with the carb you can use a Boyeseen rad valve for an 85 R or just Boyseen power reeds in the stock 83/84 cage. A new UNI filter and an open airbox lid will give your bike a little better throttle response as it'll breath better. DG makes a nice exhaust system for your bike. I would just buy the end silencer to replace the restricted stock exhaust as the stock silencer is plenty good. Thats about all the engine work you can do. A qualified bike shop can do some port and head work to increase power and compression. Wiseco makes aftermarket pistons that are lighter then stock for more hp and Douglas aluminum wheels on the rear would rid you of some rotating mass so less power is used to spin the tire/wheels. Lose anything that is not necessary on your bike to save weight, less weight means more power. Wheel spacers add width and stability to your ride therefore keeping your bike right side up. Theres a ton of mods that can be done to any bike, just a matter of how deep your pockets are.

The old CR480 aircooled twostroke motor should fit rather easily and give you great power. The 85 R forks and tripples bolt on as well. 85/86 350X and 250 R headlights should bolt on and hook up to stock electronics for a nice look.

Don't recall the CR 480 having any problems and its suppose to be a powerhouse of a motor. do some more research on this board and www.midwesttrikers.com trailprotrailpro you go hunting down a motor thinking it will bolt in. im not sure but i know it has been done and its one of the easier swaps. I think you would be happy with a rad valve, carb and pipe on your 83/84 motor, it'll run hard and with the right gearing be able to beat on some new quads.

i'll look into the cr480 but i might just leave the motor in it thats in it or i could put my parts bike together and put a 480 motor in it im not sure yet. Do any of you know a good place to get a seat cover for a 83/84r. Plus do any of you know a good site to get aftermarket plastic in a diff color other than red for a 83/84r. Not sure how long my bikes goin to be down but if its down a few months might order new plastic and give it a new look.
    Thanks

www.maier-mfg.com for plastics, the cr480 is almost a bolt in, you have to make new mounts and a custom pipe has to be made, they have tons of low end grunt and are a good motor if you take care of it properly, i seen a FTZ race head for the air cool'd R on ebay the other day, and also there is the DG air cool'd head

www.maier-mfg.com for aftermarket plastic and you may want to give one of these headlights from http://www.acerbis.com/p107_headlight/p107.html White plastic with a white DHH or Blitz headlight would look cool. www.hi-flite.com or Cascade, they make great seat covers and Hi-Flite carriers replacement foam as well.

sprocketspecialists.com will take care of trailprotrailpro 13/39 set up i have talked to one guy with this set up and says he would never go back to the 42 that his r performs very well "to much" power on the bottom-end, also he said it gives u alittle more ground clearence, doesnt really matter u will still be runnin the stock skid plate, go dg full exhaust system, i have seen one of these run be4 and it plain out HAULED! (steph) it also had the 85R carb on it, u can use a v-force reed valve on a air-cooled also and would tell u to go that way, i have a rad valve on my air-cooled and really cant tell that much difference and have been told its basically a stock reed cage with bigger reed "ports" or where the reeds go, v-force is a totally different reed valve and is highly recommended by most high performance engine builders, also use a reed spacer those will give u alittle more torque for trailprotrailpro sprocket choice but still give u the most out of trailprotrailpro performance. i have a 1/4 inch spacer on mine and love it.

what do you think would look best? keep the red plastic and blue seat with blue boots. Or Order black plastic, try gettin a black flame seat with the rest of it white or gold...bein i have gold rims on it...with black boots. and a diff headlight maybe a dhh in white or black. And get the tank painted black. i have 2 extra tanks in great shape so don't have to worry about not liking it and not bein able to go back to original color. Im just thinkin of stuff i can do to it. not sure about the black i hear its hard to keep clean. Any thoughts on any of this would be great.
    Thanks
