go with rope just make sure you have that rubber grommet in so it doesnt cut the rope

we rigged a cable to ours and it cut a 2 inch long groove in the recoil cover.

Stick with the rope, the cable is an absolute piece of crap! I had one on my 200s and no matter how tight you made the recoil spring to winde the cable in it still hung out about 6". The cable was too stiff. Go to the boat shop and get braided nylon line for boat application's, it wear's a lot longer and is stronger.
