    CDI box?

    How does one know when there cdi box is bad. If I still have spark on my 81 185s is that a good sign or bad? The spark is week and yellow. I know they are a trailprotrailprotrailprotrailprotrailpro to test but does anyone have the procedure they could post or e-mail me. Thanks

    Well, when my CDI went bad on my Yamaha XJ 550 street bike, I was getting mixed signs of spark. Like a very weird pattern...I would have a nice, fat blue spark one second, no spark at all a second later, then maybe a very week spark after that, and repeat. It would vary on all 4 cylinders too.

    there is a guy that repairs them here in oz after they loose there memory but it would be a last resort for$$$..not cheap...

    LOL...ITS ALWAYS A GOOD SIGN TO HAVE SPARK (minus the fact it is weak and yellow...it should be a "fat, wide, blud spark" [clymer manual]. If i was you, i would by a cheap one off ebay, and go from there.

    How do I know that the ones off ebay are going to be any good either? I mean I could sell mine as good but I bet it isn't. You know what I mean, just because I have spark doesn't mean that it is any good right!

    you are right about being a pain to test out the cdi's mick ,,, time consuming also.
    indicators of a bad cdi are weak or no spark ( at least that's what my manuals say )

    i didnt think i had a weak spark but i worked on this guys 200m and when i turned it over it had a huge spark compared to mine and i shocked myself and i couldnt even feel my bikes spark sometimes but his i felt strong every time would the cdi or ignition coil or both be responsible for that

    my bike runs fine most of the time but sometimes it has trouble starting its a 86 200s .20 over high compression not sure how high
