I just got my 85 and it does'nt seem to me like the decompression is working. My dad has to basicly jump on the kick starter to get it going. Exactly how hard is it supposed to be?

Not that hard. Have you adjusted the decompression cable? Most of them have streached over the years, and are not working well any more

If you have to jump on the kick start that hard you'll probably end up cracking the kick start in the future. 2 of my 5 350x's have had the kick start crack.
I suggest getting the decompression cable working properly, and even when its working right use this procedure to start it:
Kick it over very slowly until you get on the compression stroke, this is probably where you are jumping on it at. Slowly kick it past this and it should kick over very easily. Keep kicking slowly until it comes back to the compression stroke, then when you feel it go easy kick it hard like your trying to start it. If it doesn't start repeat procedure.
yea , you should notice the compression release work on the first slow kick then bring it back up about 3/4 of the way and stomp

i finally adjusted mine over the weekend and what a difference it made.
i felt ,,, like hrc200x said,,, that i was gonna strip or break something in the long run if i didn't get it working.
the manual says to have the engine at t.d.c. ( top dead center on the compression stroke ) and adjust the cable to 1mm - 2mm of free play at the lever located on the top front , right hand side of the motor.

Even with the compression cable, it is alot harder to kick than say a 200x. I have to kick mine with my left leg, due to a bad right knee. But the compression release should make it alot easier.

Honda's with compression release that work ????????? wow.. you learn something new everyday here... LOL...
Does anyone know if it works the same for the 200x, that whole kick it slowly at first thing to get the compression up. My kicker slips real bad the first couple kicks.
are you saying that as a fact or a statement..Originally Posted by 250sxwheeliepop
If fact you are incorrect. They don't have decompression releases stock, you could put a 200 rocker cover on one though, that would work... But you shouldnt need it.

Adjust your decompression cable.
If it's shot...they're only $19 at the dealer.
Buy a new one.
When it's adjusted right, they kick over VERY nicely.
EASY to do.
my decompression cable is broken...it doesnt kick over that hard. i can stand on it when it gets compression built up. i weigh 115. but it dont kick so hard that it should break the arm.

probably the reason why they do'n't work is because the cam follower in the cluth cover is broke, like both my 86 200x motors. It doens't bother me at, when I rebuild my motor I'll put a new one in,
On my 350X the cam thing on the kicker is broken and it is not that hard to kick.
