25x8x12 verse 25x10x12 inch front tire for big red.

hey guys I bought a polished 12x7 inch itp rim with the same offset as the stock wheel to replace the front rim and tire on my 85 bigred.

initially I wanted to get the titan at489 in 25-8-12 for the front but wal mart doesn;t cary it anymore and I would have to order it. they do stock 25-10-12 should I get this?

is there any adverse effects of running a 25-10-12 over a 25-8-12 tire? would the handling be that much better with the 25-8-12?

please advise I am also planning on 22-11-10 or 24-11-10 inch dirt devils or at 489's for the rear on 10x10 inch douglas 190's. I am also considering dirt devils instead of 489's for the front.

I can pick up the 12-10-12 anytime and mount it up since they are instock at all 4 wally worlds in town.

It would be eiser to turn with a skinner tire. I prefer a wider tire, it just makes it a little more stable. I always run knobbies on the front and I have Kenda Bear Claw's in the rear. The rear is where you need the traction. Go with the less agressive front tire and put real agressive tires on the rear. Its personal preference with the front tire width.

Make sure you don't rub the forks with a wide tire.

That's a real problem with the SX.
    Currently :

Keep in mind that regardless of the tire size, the tire beads will still be the same distance apart as determined by your rim. On rounded profile tires, its very common to see as much of a height increase as a width increase with a wider tire, the same way you can mount a narrow tire on a wider rim, and it suddenly becomes a low profile tire.

that is my thinking as well. I figure a 25-8-12 on a 12x7 inch rim will be flatter then the 25-10-12 this leads me to think that the 25x8x12 will be less efficient am I crazy?

also I would like to increase the ability to slide. I'm going with a 24-11-10 or 22-11-10 on the rear for this reason on a 10x10 inch rim the tire should be almost square.

common guys am I correct with the thinking above ?

also I have narrowed it down to two choices.
25-8-12 maxxxis pro xgt tire or 24-8-12 chen sheing lightfoot.

that is unless I am correct in the above post and I should go with a 25-10-12

    Am I missing something here?

The stock tires for a 85-7 big red are 25-12-9.
You can go with 25-13-9 on the rear for lots better traction.

On a 7" front rim, youll probably be better off with the 8" tire than the 10". The idea is to get a tire that fits right without having to distort its intended shape too much.

The tire width vs rim width mostly pertains to rounded profile tires that have a width measured in an arc. If you want to slide and are looking at rear tires, the flat profile tires work best, and tire width is more the actual surface that hits the ground, and doesnt change much with rim width. Most flat profile tires such as Holeshots or Turf Tamers come in a 9.5" width and also an 11" or 12" width. On 200x or smaller, Id run 9.5, but on the bigger machines Id go 11 or 12, whichever they have.

I just looked back and noticed you are running a Big Red. Id strongly advise against worrying much about powerslides. Thats not really the best machine to work with in that area. Id stick with a rounded type tire. They dont slide as well and arent as stable, but they grab much better, and they give you a MUCH smoother ride, especially on machines that arent known for their plush suspension.

thanks tim. I picked up my rear tires and wheels today. they are more round then I expected, but I havn;t checked there pressure I think they are over inflated as they were not as round when I had 489's on my scrambler.

22x11x10 at 489's on 10x10's. they are still round but not nearly as crappy of a tire as the ones it had. hope to try them out saturday.

the thing drove horrible before even with 2.5 inch spacers it would want to flip. I'm not looking to haul around on it, but just want a cool trial trike.

I want to try out my other new mod as well a 5gallon cooler. =-)
