    '84 Tecate troubleshooting questions

Hey guys, (I apologize in advance for the long post)

I'm about halfway through the restoration of my '84 Tecate. I bought it about 4 or 5 years ago and just got around to working on it....I knew it had ignition problems when I bought it but I knew it could be fixed.

When I bought the trike, the guy I bought it from said he dropped the flywheel and knocked the magnets out....he glued them back in....when I checked the magnets (there are four, two positive and two negative) he had them arranged ++ --, I took them out and reposition them as +-+-.

The problem is I'm not exactly sure what the problem is. When I got home from work today I popped the stator/flywheel in and plugged all the wires together.

I have one of those little ignition testers, basically just a small light bulb inline on the plug wire. When I turn the engine over I get a very weak spark, but at least theres a spark.

    OK heres the questions...

    1. Did I mess up the flywheel by going +-+- ?
    2. Could the stator cause a weak spark, or do they simply work or not work?
    3. Maybe a coil, CDI, or something I'm missing....

I had intended to just replace the flywheel stator, but I hate to make a $200 mistake, any help will be greatly appreciated.

replace both the stator anf flywheel for peace of mind. the magnets tend to come loose and take out the stator.

Buy a new Ricky stator and flywheel like deathman said the stockers are a poor design. You have a very nice project going there, a profile pic from the other side would be nice to see if you have one. Best of luck with finishing it.

did anyone notice the spark plug wire near the coil? looks to be worn out right there from the tank, could that also be part of the problem?

tecate250RR, you're right, the coil wire is worn near the coil, but its not through the insulation. I had the coil checked at a garage and they said it was fine. They put it some fancy tester they had.
I plan on replacing it anyway because this one is not original, it must be from a junk yard because it has "KX 125" scratched into the paint.

    Tecate Project

Yes go to Ricky Stator and get new for piece of mind. A sweet project like that deserves the best, not questionable parts. Im allmost done with my Tecate and from experience its better to know there isnt going to be any failures. Lets see some more Pics and put it in the Restoration section on this site.

Your right MEATbox, I'll be ordering a flywheel/stator from Ricky Stator in the future.

I saw your project on there, it looks great, do you have any more recent photos?
My project is on a much smaller budget, "repair what I can and grab the s" is the motto for this one.

I'm also interested in putting my project in the restoration section.
I went and checked it out, it says to "contact me if you're interested....." but it doesn't say who to contact.

    Or maybe I overlooked something?

Thanks for the info MEATbox, I'll try to get the info together this weekend, it depends on the weather.
Its supposed to be cold and raining/snowing this weekend and my computer usage increases as the weather gets worse, I rarely touch my home computer in the summer time.
