I think that it causes premature needle seat failure, it gums up your carb bowl (two stroke only I think), and if your needle seat does wear out, if you have a gravity fed fuel system, it could fill the carb and make a gas leak.Originally Posted by bigredhead

It doesn't hurt to turn it off but leaving it on won't destroy anything immediately. If the fuel sits in the carb (or anywhere else) too long, it will deteriorate and varnish will cake everything. The jets and needle/seat are tough to clean when this happens. If the needle/seat doesn't seal, fuel will pour into the carb, cylinder, airbox, and overflow. This can screw things up.
