how do i test coil on 200x?

i dont think im getting any spark from my 85 200x
i took the plug out and left it hooked up to the plug wire
and grounded it to the motor and kicked it over but i didnt see any
spark? i also held my finger to the end of the plug and kicked it over and it didnt shock me.
does this mean the coil is bad?
and is there a better way to test for spark

im also thinking it could be the kill switch but i doubt it...

    any help would be appreciated.

The coil isnt commonly a problem. I would be just holding the spark plug lead 1/2" from the engine and see if you get a spark (or hold the wire). That eliminates the problem being the spark plug.

You can disconnect your kill switch by unplugging the wire that goes from the CDI box (the one with heaps of wires coming from it) to the kill switch. All the kill switch does is sends this wire to ground so make sure that it doesnt touch anything when its unplugged or you will have no spark.

Check that you have all your wires going to the right places and that they are all plugged in correctly.

Check the pickup (located in the head) isnt touching the rotor or that its not too far away. If it has been touching make sure that it isnt damage. Adjust as necessary.

Make sure that the coil is grounded well. Sometimes corosion can build up and affect spark. Also try a different spark plug lead or check that its hooked to the coil properly.

Only thing left to check is that there is charge comming from the electrics located in the bottom of the motor. Attach a small light bulb to the wire and ground the bulb. Give it a kick or two and see if you have light. Sometimes the charging coils can get damaged if the flywheel picks up some metal (its magnetic remember) and spins around so the metal hits the charge coils and damages them. Off to the wreckers or salvage yard or whatever you want to call it if this is the case.

    Good luck.

on the plug wire going into the coil
the wire is only sticking out like 1/32 of an inch
and isnt connected to anything, is this right?

also, there is no headlight, that wouldnt have my wiring thrown off would it?

and when you say the electrics in the bottom of the motor are you talking about the two wires coming out of the stator assembly?
if so which one do i hook the light to? (to test the charging coils)
i did not know that the charging coils could get damaged
so i will be scared when i try this..
and you say there is no way to repair that if that is the case??

Thanks a lot for your advice.

    That plug lead sounds fine.

I am talking about the two wires coming from the stator assembly. The headlight hooks to the yellow wire and the black is for the ignition system. Hook a small bulb to the black wire to see if it is producing any electricity (or use a amp meter if you have one).

Dont be scared to do it because if it doesnt work further inspection may find a damage wire thats earthing out or infact the wire is completely snapped off! You can take off the flywheel and inspect the charging system for damage but if its producing power then probably no need.

well, i hooked up a wire to the ignition wire coming from the stator
and grounded it, kicked it over a couple of times hooked to a light
nothing happened, so i stuck it to my tongue a couple of times and
    it didnt shock me.

i took the stator off it looks ok, but someone may have switched the coils
from another bike (not a 200x) out on it.
the screws that hold them in are almost stripped.

is the only charging system inside the stator or is there something else behind the flywheel and can i take the flywheel off without tearing anything up? in other words it will go right back on?

but as far as i know right now i think its the stator.
will probably try a new one before i do anything else.

You sure you arent an aussie? How did you manage to kick it AND hold your tongue on the wire? I agree BRILLIANT!

What happens when you do that to the headlight wire (the yellow one)

beleive it or not i actually wanted it to shock me!
i didnt try it with the yellow wire.

just got this motor and have yet to fire it..
its just like the 84 i had, it nickeled and dimed me to death
    befroe its maiden voyage.
i stripped it down to the frame and partially restored it!
i bought it for 100$ and put about 800$ in it
i had it running like a champ.
it seems to me when you really weigh it up you can get just about
any old 3 wheeler running for around a grand.
which is really not that much money to keep the dream alive.
looks like ive started over again with an 85.
this time i might just restore it to mint and TRY to hold on to it.
i also have a big red that came with this one and its getting spark!!!
