to Sleeve or not to Sleeve?

Considering picking up a bike that needs to be sleeved as it has been bored over to many times, For the same price I can pick up a used cylinder that needs to be bored or get the current head sleeved. I would think sleeving it would be better, but my uncle who is a vet of ATV's thinks sleeving isnt that dependable. So what kinda info do you guys have to offer, or what expierences have you had?

    Thanks - Morgan

why isnt sleeving dependable??? it might be if it was a nikasiled aluminum cylinder, but as far as i know the lt's have a cast iron sleeve, which are actually sleeved to begin with from the factory....L.A.Sleeve makes some really nice factory replacement sleeves, i would recommmend them, and an autmotive machine/race shop or a place that builds race engines to install it because you have to line the ports in the cylinder up with the port holes in the sleeve, and then you should have them matched to each other....but if you can find a boreable cylinder that would be the way to go, givin it has a good amount of bores left, if it doesnt, i would just get yours sleeved and avoid a later problem, and you would have ended up buying that cylinder for nothing....

    just my opinion....

no same price for re-sleeving or new (used) head and a bore job

L.A. Sleeve is Somewhat Loacal so i would just have the do it insertion also

I'd just get the jug re-sleeved, you'll have a fresh cylinder that you know will have a lot of room to overbore if needed in the future.
Also make sure you re-jet the carb, since it sounds like the guy burnt up the piston due to a lean carb. Or you could buy a product called a dial-a-jet, it gives your carb as much fuel as it needs for mods, altitude changes, climate changes, so you'll never have to re-jet or worry about blowing your top end up,plus it gives you added throttle response, I have one on my Z and it's awesome. It retails at about $70, and you'll find all the information you need by doing a search on thunder products incorporated.
