Rick,
The only thing is, that trikes don’t attract any more irresponsible people then 2-wheelers do! I’m sure I could find some real jerks on dirt bikes out at Glamis during a Holiday weekend where you’ve got a drugged, drunk, and naked guy riding a wheelie in between campsites on a CR500. Am I right?
Not to long ago, the US forestry banned night riding of any off-road vehicle in the national forests anytime before dawn and after sunset. Main cause? Loud pipes from aftermarket exhaust systems, mostly 4 strokes. Are there some dirtbikes with insanely loud pipes that irritated this problem? Sure. Is there some quads with insanely loud pipes that irritated this problem? Sure. Were there any innocent riders with non-offensive exhausts getting blamed? Sure.
The Piersons milk vetch closing’s at Glamis in 2000 and 2001 were suppose to have been temporary, but from last account I read the BLM were going to keep them closed for a bit longer because “Lack of compliance” with the boundaries. Were there some three-wheeler riders involved with the lack of compliance? Probably. Dirt bikes, Quads, Buggies, Trucks too? Probably. Case in point, pickup the February ’05 edition of “Racer X” and turn to page 183 where there is a picture of a guy jumping over a fire on an XR50, from a ramp, wearing a baseball cap and tennis shoes. Does this qualify for “Responsible motorcyclists”? Is it an accurate portrayal of the average dirt bike rider? Does the general populace think it is?
The spin-off ATV magazine from Dirtbike, Dirtwheels, printed a 20 year anniversary article this month on the ATC250R. It is clear that some people are starting to recognize three-wheelers as what they are-an important piece of ATV history that should not be forgotten. As the Webmaster of a three-wheeler enthusiast and one of the forum admins at
www.3wheelerworldforums.com all I’m asking for Rick is an equal opportunity to be respected as a conscious and responsible off-roader. Its bad enough fighting off the biased media and environmental groups, but having a fellow off-roader at your throat just isn’t good.
