    tecate won't start, fouls plug

Last week i bought 2 tecate's and i very nice TRi z. the tri z runs and starts perfect. but the tecate keeps fouling the plug. At first i could get it to kick start then i could only pull start it but now it won't start at all, and the plug is wet each time i check it. the spark is great and dark blue. and when i first got it, i cleaned out the carb. and put in fresh gas (premix) now when we try to pull start it, it doesn't even try to start. anyone have any ideas on what i can try? there are no leaks and everything visually looks good.

i should also mention that there are no modifications done to the motor. stock bore, exhaust, air cleaner set up, etc. and i was told by the previous owner a dealer had just put in new rings and it has very good compression.

i have no clue, i would asume it is, the guy i got it from said he was told its all stock.
but just recently i took off the flywheel cover and there was water in it, so i asume thats my problem, i'm going to let it set overnight and hopefully it will dry out, i also noticed it looks like the magnets on the flywheel were reglued in. but since it was running that shouldn't matter. i also will clean all the grounds for it and clean the rust off, and hopefully it'll be running again.

Had the same problem with my 84 Tecate, Check your gap on plug if set too wide mine wouldn't start either. Also found reeds were not seating properly replaced with carbon fiber boyesson reeds and took expansion chamber off and cleaned out inside with cleaner and re-installed. Starts on 2nd kick every time and when properly warmed up runs like a striped ass ape!!! Oh I am using golden spectro 2 stroke oil in my premix seems to work good for me!!!

the plug is gaped pretty close, i checked out the reeds and i could see they weren't sealing all the way, (could see light) so i cleaned them up, and i sprayed some penitrating fulid on the carb side and it eventually dripped out, are they supposed to seal perfectly? i also took off the exhaust and there was no gas sitting in it, and it just looked like a normal 2 stroke exhaust, oily, nothing really that would be cleaned out and make a difference. i also got the flywheel back on, and i noticed the spark is blue but its really skinny and won't jump off the plug, i even sprayed some starting fluid on the end of the plug and turned it over, it would spark but wouldn't light the starter fulid. (i've tried that on other stuff and lit quickly) my 2nd tecate is missing a motor but has everything else so i tried all electrical stuff one at a time with no change. the only thing i don't have 2 of is a flywheel. i even cleaned all the grounds. any more ideas on what i should check out?

the reeds should be snug, no light. you can try removing the reed from the cage and turn
them over. run a compression test. i learned not to believe much of what a seller is telling me has been done to an engine. my 250r was supposedly ported, not even close. same for a spare engine i bought of ebay.

when i put the reeds back in there was no light shining through them, but it didn't hold fluid to long. and once i got them in i did a compression test. it was 30*F out and it had 160 lbs. of compression. but i'm leaning toward it being a spark problem.

dude, thats your problem....its 30* out! these two strokes are a s.o.b. to start when its cold....just warm your garage up with a salamaner or something and let yur wheeler sit in there for a couple hours and it should fire right up....you can also use a spark plug one size hotter...at least according to my clymer manual for my 250r....it says for cold weather use a br8es instead of a normal br9es...but i just let mine warm up in the garage for a while and it starts first or second kick every time....im sure it will be the same for your tecate....

well, my Tri-z starts in the same weather with 2 kicks with the choke on. and today it was around 55*F and the tecate would not start.
would it make any difference if you have weak spark and try a hotter plug? (can the hotter plug make you have better spark?)

When you are checking for good spark, are you using a new plug, or are you still looking at the fouled one?

its not a brand new plug but, we have a spark plug cleaner that burns EVERYTHING off the plug. so the plug itself is good, i tired about 5 different ones too.

i got what the readings ares supposed to be for testing the stator from ricky stator and mine read way off. both checks went all the way over to 0 ohms. i even tried testing it while turning the motor over and the needle just bounced from once side to another. (not sure what the means though, if anything)

that was the problem/symptoms with mine. Buy the coil packs from Rickystator, they're only $40 and all you have to do is solder 3 wires. It will save you $60+. Good luck, keep us updated.
