Rebuild the 200es fork for $175 in parts.....

That's for new dampers, guides, rubber bushings, dust seals and clamps..going to re-use the old boots and springs...worth the effort?

I've got the fork sliders and sprung dampers soaked in kerosene now..could just clean it all up..bel-ray the ever lovin billy sht out of them and slap it all together cause nothings broke.

BTW: Service Honda's interactive page didn't take any of these ten part numbers..I did get them on their flitche but that can't get an order placed..wonder if they've had it with all the discontinued crap they have to tolerate?

Well after soaking in kerosene for two days and my son scrubbing the sprung dampers I took them apart and discovered the dampers are still working fine..the plasic guides look good but they have to come out except the circular retaining clips still look rusted in...have to get it all disassembled so the fork sliders can go in to be boiled.

If all goes well I'll just get new dust seals and bel-ray the ever lov'n billie sht out of it all and re-visit it every couple years...that's the key to proper fork maintenance I'd bet.

And there's no evidence of any fluid in these '84 Big Red forks...I have a service disk and owners manual now too...no mention ever of fork fluids at all.

You really caught my attention about no oil in forks.

Actually there is oil in them but not in the lower leg like in the rest of the models. It is in the none servicable fork damper #5. The damper is just like any strut on a car, or like on hatch backs that have them on both sides of the hatch. That's how it controls the motion of the spring, by the oil inside them.

They should have resistance when working them by hand in & out. They also should be fairly even in resistance also. If not they are shot. If they are not too pricey (if you can even get them?) I'd replace them but like said, if the resistance is good I guess why bother.

Interesting........never knew they made any that way.......now I know.

BTW - in the Clymer manual it says to check the damper for leakage (means oil) and make sure rod is straight. Also says canot be rebuilt which I stated earlier.

    Hope I helped some.

When getting any parts (just for the heck of it) try Manchester Honda.

    http://www.manhonda.com/parts.cfm

    Excellent service

Fast shipping ......and never messed up my order

    Usually cheaper then anyone else!

They even send me cards asking how their parts service is........NO COMPLAINTS what so ever!

Only bummer is you must call or email them about a part. They don't have a OEM listing on site.

Disassembled the fork sliders tonite..I mean the retaining spring and all six neoprene guides and the guts are all hamburger..ruined by removing them, but after twenty some years it was unavoidable... so the final word is about $75.00 with shipping to redo the 200es forks.

The empty fork sliders go off to the boiler monday.

    Huffa,

in your service manual #15 has a beveled edge, does it give you the direction of the bevel on the lowest (bottom) fitment?...would think that it's down but the picture doesn't confirm that.

ok jsut got an email from a honda shop that used to rebuild these forks. they said the es stockers were junk and would out of the factory NEW fail in 1-2 years. That being said, I do not want to worrie about trying to find repalcement forks in 1-2 years from now. so they recommended I change the front to a 200m. they said same size front tire, but better shocks.
