    CDI Timing Advance swap.

    Ok.. here goes.

My 82 200 and 84 200 ES have each other's CDI Timing advance modules. ( the part behind the alum cover that says CDI on it on the head.. ) I swaped them out a while back when the big red would not run.. ended up being the carb was dirty, but i left them swaped, simply because was too lazy to put them back.

Now, they both run, but not the way they should, both carbs have kits in them, the timing seems fine, valves have not been touched yet, so that's the next step..

But.. can anyone tell me for sure if they are interchangable or not ? they look identical, and bolt right on, but i wonder if the weights are different, or if there is anything i should be aware of ?

I believe those parts are the same for all the 200cc as well as the 185cc engines. I have parts from both size engines and they all look the same except the cylinder bore size.
84 ATC200X--Wife rode it once, now I can't get it back.
84 ATC250R--Trying to find piston for 300R kit.
85 ATC350X--Project finally under way, slow progress. For pics: http://groups.msn.com/ATCfriends/350xproject.msnw
84 ATC200S--Freebie from a neighbor, needs topend rebuild and tires.

hey, they are the same, but you can advance or retard the spark timing in there, check it out.

The advance was never touched tho, i beleive you have to loosen the 2 srews and rotate the ring plate for this,, and that was never done.

the rotor gap was adjusted tho, but that's it.

The weights were disconnected from the rotor on both, if they were 180 around, would the bikes still run ? or simply not spark at the right time at all ? This is a posibility i've thought about.

The manual says to line up the mark on the weights with the mark on the rotor but i canot see those marks in the black and white clymer or on the unit either. so i just put it in and it ran, and i left it as it was...

If it runs it isnt 180 out. To see if they are the same, there will be a number stamped on them like 427. If they are different then they will operate at different RPM.
