I have a PVL on my R. A couple friends do also. I bought it because I briefly ran my R on alcohol and needed the extra spark to make my motor run well. It works OK, but I would simply get a Ricky Stator rewind job for higher output if I had to do it again. Don't get me wrong, I've used a PVL for 6 or 7 years and it's fine, but you lose two things:
First is your lighting. I really don't care about it, but it would have been nice to have lights for some night riding.
Second, you lose your torque. It eliminates the flywheel and replaces it with a much smaller and lighter weight. I find myself having to downshift on the track more than I'd like. On a large sweeping turn, the motor screams, but I end up feathering the clutch out of many turns because I have no torque.
Oh you also have to set your timing yourself with a dial indicator. Not a bolt on solution.
Other than that, It works fine, but not enough to make me want to buy another one.
Just my 2 cents.
I have a cr ignition on mine and definety a loss of torque, but the revs are worth the small loss in torque, the pvl has almsot no flywheel, the cr has a flywheel about half the size of the trx.
This is what the PVL looks like

I have a moto-plat ignition on my 86 Tecate as this is the way it was when purchased used. The Moto-Plat is the predecessor to the PVL by the way. Setting the timing is a pain for sure. I have spoken to nearly all of the old factory tuners from the 80's and every single one recommended going back to the factory style ignition (At least on the Tecate).

I just put a pvl ignition on my 350 power valve motor. I have not had a chane to test it yet so dont know what kind of difference it will make. I am going to L.S. sand dunes in Waynoka, Okalahoma this weekend. I will let you know how it performs. It appears to rev up much faster then before. Glenn Oister
