    Honda rear sprocket felt washers

    84 200S

I just can't figure out what the purpose of these felt washers do.

Honda calls them dust seals and what puzzels me is there is nothing on the sprocket assembly that can get dust in.

You 1st put a felt washer on, then sprocket, then felt washer, metal washer and circlip.

I have no idea what all this accomplishes and doesn't seem like you even need it.

Can someone enlighten me on their purpose?

    Parts are 16, 29 and 17 (2 of them) on http://houseofmotorcycles.bikebandit.../H00600038.gif

The pic will come up small and you have to wait a second or move mouse a bit till the "click on" blow up square appears.

Being felt (best I can describe it) I would think when getting wet it would promote rust because it holds the water for quite sometime till it dries out. At least I think it would?
