whats the differance or which is better for an 84 r?? and why cant u adjust a chain on an 84r??? im lost

You are able to adjust the chain on a 84R. I think you adjust it by sliding back the swingarm bolt like my 82R and 83-85 200X or possibly the 83-84R might have the adjustable axle carrier. I know the 85-86R and the 350X have the axle carrier adjustment, not sure when the R got that treatment in 2nd or 3rd generation.

I actually use the "X-Ring" chain on my trikes. Pay about 2X the cost of a cheapo, but has a 34X wear rating, and have yet to wear one out!

hey thanx for the come back, ill go look at it cuz i wasnt sure and do ya know where i can get the "x' ring chain? if i cant get it adjusted,maybe it would be time for a rear sprocket too?

O-ring chain is a much tougher chain. The rollers have grease inside them and they are sealed up with o-rings. The non o-ring chain is cheaper, and is used by motocross racers becaue it is lighter and easier for the motor to turn than an o-ring. They wear out quickly though. I recommend running the o-ring, or like Bruce said, the X-ring chain. They take abuse and last a long time.

You might want to get a little bit longer chain when you buy one, I found out my Tecate didnt have a stock swingarm so I bought two chains, I am now running a DID X-ring chain, I compared to to a non-x/o-ring chain and it looks massive, the chain itself is thicker and it is able to handle 8000lbs+ of tension forces, this can be good or bad. Forget about replacing an X-ring, it will last a couple years, but be sure you have a good quality sprocket, otherwise it will eat sprockets alive, I would reccomend staying away from allmnium sprockets also, I have had a bad experince with one, it was totally ruined after one ride. I was pretty mad. Hope this helps.

I am experimenting with a new set of sidewinder chain and sprockets. The cost was more than i wanted to spend, but from what ive heard about their stuff, it will probably last forever. im using them on my 86R project. And i went with an o ring chain. Remember if you replace one sprocket, you should probably do both , and get a chain while your at it, especially if its old, alot of bad things can happen when chains and or sprockets fail.

faf_racing: i have run both the o-ring and non-oring on my 83 R. The o ring is way better IMO..it lasts longer i have found and sounds cooler

You can adjust the chain on the 84r by turning the axle carrier.
