    Question Whats a 1985 Yamaha 225DX worth

Guy locally has one. Black with a rack. Been sitting for a year and doesnt run at the moment. Good tires. Has camo tape all over the dang thing. Seat has a small tear. Was running good when parked. I havent seen it yet. But will in a little while hopefully. Hes asking $500. What do you guys think? Im going to try and come off the price since it wont run at the moment. He said it prob needs a plug and a carb cleaning. Give me some info folks. I might go buy it tommorow. Info Please. Oh yeah and its stored in the garage.

Well when i was younger, my 200s sat in the garage for about 2 years at one point, just was moved around and never started. I went to go start it up finally, and it fired right up. These machines never die, but yea, try to talk him down in price and youre good to go.

That price seems a little high to me but I would start right around 250.00 as long as it is all there and has decent compression. maybe there is some decent plastic under that nasty camo.

If it would only need a plug & carb cleaning and the rest of the machine is decent I'd say 500 is a fair price. Take a fresh plug that you know sparks and test it. A compression test wouldn't hurt either. Wish you had some pic's.

I figure a good running one in great shape fetches between 650 & 800.

What exactly do you mean......."Has camo tape all over the dang thing."

    Where all over?

I have had five '83-'84 225DXs, and I would recommend one to anyone they were good reliable machines. I bought one a few years ago that had been sitting outside for years. The tires were dry rotted real bad. I brought it home, cleaned the mouse nest out of the air box, gave it a shot of starting fluid and she fired right up.

Rule of thumb..... if it ain't running, don't pay more than $300.

Sometimes they start up and everything is fine with just a few $$$. Then you feel good in your $300 investment.

OR... you pay $300, you finally get spark and the motor running and find out it has a bad cam chain... then you try to put it in reverse and it won't work. You clunk it in drive gear and the tranny grinds... you tweek it so the tranny catches, then find out the shaft drive in the rear is making funny noises....let alone the brake cables and other odds and ends!

That's stuff doesn't bother you too bad if you only paid $300 for it, but if you pay like $500 for it, then every thing is no good, you feel kinda taken.

I would have to agree with Bruce on this one. Unless it is in really nice shape and that camo tape has me thinking it isn't, $500 is too much for it not running. Maybe $400 but not $500, all the little things add up quick.

Bruce, Last summer I picked up my 200m. It was setting in the weeds with two flat tires, paid $65.00 for it. Brought it home, tried to get it to fire while still in the bed of my truck. Took the seat off to shoot starting fluid in the airbox, and there was a snake coiled up under the seat, scared the crap out of me. The next day, unloaded it got it running, put air in the tires, was riding around the yard. Next thing I know there are ants crawling all over my arm, there was a nest in the killswitch. This was one of my better ones.LOL

Sorry Clay, got carried away on your thread. Back to the subject. If I could pickup another 225dx, I would in a heartbeat. The worst thing in my mind about them. I have never seen where anybody but Yamaha ever made fenders for them.

Ok. Here she is. The only thing that is broke on it is the tip of the right brake lever, and the recoil start. The thing is honestly in good shape. Plastic is not cracked at all. Light surface scratches but thats it. We took the tape off on the right side and the plastic looked good. Anyway heres the pics. He said it ran a year ago. All work it needed, he took to the dealer and had it done. He bought it from the original owner that was a friend of his. Handlebars are even straight. Front forks are straight and the seals are good. Rubber boots are pefect. seat has a tear at the back. Tranny seems tight. Electric start turned it over, but it wouldnt crank. He said it never smoked. Muffler is solid. Not rusted out. Sorry to ramble. I think im going to buy it. Gona offer $400 and work my way up. Oh yeah the tires are almost new, and it comes with 2 new Carlise nobbies as spares.
