Looking for 200S pull start

Pull start on my 200S will not retract. I have disassembled, lubed but still no luck. Anybody know where I can purchase a replacement?

dennis kirk has the full rebuild kit for like $66 dollars......i would recommend doing that.....cause they are pretty high on ebay

Whoa! You never said why it won't work? Is the main spring in the housing busted? Got to be a reason why it's not working.

The rope will retract up to a point when I have the assembly off the bike but when I install and pull the rope it may retract the first time but the second it does not. Its like the catch on the shaft that engages the spring slips away from the spring.

How do you tighten the spring tension when you have the assembly off?

If you're going to own an S, you have to become a pull start expert.

Just yesterday the same thing happend to me, this is what I did.......

I took it apart and the hook that holds the spring to the housing had broken, heat the tip of the spring untill its cherri red (spring steel is very hard and will snap if you try too bend with out heat). With needle nose pliers, bend it to a hook again, but make sure the hook is away from the center of the coil. Let it cool natrually, if you dip it in water it will become brittle and snap as soon as you put any stress on it.


Rewinding is hard too explain in type, but is very easy to do, re-tie the rope too the spindle, put the rope through the hole in the cover, re-assemble the dog teeth and springs, put the cover on, followed by a washer, then E-clip, re-attatch the handle, then with needle nose pliers, get a decent size loop in the rope, you will see a little notch in the wheel, put the rope in the notch, and turn the spindle in the direction it would be turning if you were trying too start the machine, when turning it becomes stressfull, pull the loop out of the rope, it will be twisted a bit, let the spring pull the rope back in, if it doesnt go in all the way, repeat the loop in the rope, and put it back into that notch, and put a few more turns on it.

not claiming too be correct, but thats what saved my butt from spending damn near $80 on a pull start, good luck, hope i could be of assistance.

Spring dosent appear to be broken and I have been able to reassembled the entire unit, so know have the assembled unit with the rope fully extended. What is the purpose of making a loop in the rope and are you making the loop outside of the starter casing or inside?

Inside, and the loop is there too give you enough slack so you can turn it a few times to put tension on the spring.

make sure you wind it up extra tight before putting it back on.....and make sure the little part of the spring bent back to hold it from turning isnt broken........by the way to do it right....you need to people.....one wind it up really tight while the orther runs the rope thrue.....and put the paws springs plate and c clip back on then let the rope rewind back in......or you can wind it up and put some vice grips on it or somthing to do it by yourself
