Removing Dents from Exhaust Pipe?????

I finally found a aftermarket pipe for my 85 Z but is has a couple dents in it. What is the best way to remove the dents???? I thought about tack welding a rod to it, then heating it and pulling the dents out. Please let me know if there is a better way. Thanks

That's one way to get them out. You may have to use a dent puller on the rod to get the stubborn ones out. On really bad dents, the pipe must be cut across the dent. The damaged portions then worked back into place then the pipe welded back together.

i second mobular, this is wat i did to my R pipe if * have a welding electrode or any peice of rod weld it in the center of the dent take a slide

and use the rode to bang it back out

I've seen this done (on my pipe) already and it works great. I did not perform the task though, only watched.

You make 2 plugs for the pipe to seal it tight and on the one plug you install a tire stem valve somehow. You pressurize the pipe with so many lbs of air and heat the dented area up being careful not to heat it too much so you don't burn through it. I do remember it got quite red though. The metal weakens at that area and from the pressure the dents pop out!

Or you can send it here if you want it perfect. Might be cheaper then they say if it's just minor dents.

yep i agree with huffa the tradie at my work used to do this for people as a second buisness but it got to much he said people were bringing pipes from everywhere he showed me how to do it so.bring on the dints lol

depending on how big the dents are you might try dry ice. a lot of body mechanics use that to get small dent out of body panels. if you do go that way you need to use some either really thick rubber glove or insulated gloves so you dont get burned
