PLAEASE HELP! Will an 86 YZ clutch cover fit a tri Z bottom end?

I have a chance to get some YZ parts for my power valve conversion, but they are from an 86. Will they work? Also, how do I correct the kick start? Any help would be appreciated; I have to let the guy know tomorrow morning if I want the parts.

Yes, the inner cases should be exactly the same. But why do you want to use the YZ sidecase on the Tri-Z? You'll have a backwards kicker then. You can either use the YZ engine and transplant your Tri-Z sidecase and kicker gears over, or use the Tri-Z engine and transplant the powervalve stuff over, all of it can go in a Tri-Z sidecase. You'll need to talk to Neil (Chainsaw) Nathan (03OrangeShee) or Derrick (Derrick Adams) since they have all done it for more detail. I have the stuff to do it but need to get my cylinder sleeved and figure out how to correct the angled intake since I want to use the 85 cylinder.

That is what I was wondering. I have read some where that I can use the YZ side cover as long as I use the Tri Z kick start kear. does that mean thay are not intercahangable? This deal also includes the jug as well. Should I get the jug and head only?

I dont think the YZ sidecase will allow the little cover from the Tri-Z to go on that reverses the direction of the kicker.

You need alot more stuff then just the head and cyl. You need that, plus the powervalve, the covers, the govenoer linkage/rod, the gears out of the YZ sidecase, and a different gear that runs off the crankshaft I believe. I dont know all the exact parts off hand.

I'm sorry, I should have been more specific. I know I need the rest of the parts to make this work. All that is included in the deal. My mane concern was paying for something I do not need. If the side cover can not be used I will save a little money. Thanks for the help! I will contact the guy and let him know what I do and do not need.

The clutch covers wont swap over. It is different where the kick starter stuff is, and the way its molded. However, the Tri Z kick starter gears will work in the YZ one if you were wondering that.

So, does that mean I can use the Tri Z kick start gears in the YZ engine?

Nice win Louis, I had been watching that engine but more important things came up. Like that shifter it has on there? Haha.

its beyond me why Yamaha didnt do this in the first place. Just put the YZ motor in, and make it kick forward. You wouldnt hear a peep about 250Rs if yamaha would of done that.

I totally agree. The Tri Z is a superior ride in my opinion. Even with the stock motor my 86 is very close to my stock 86 R.

The powerband is broader on the Z and much more versitile....yet it still wants to rev.

The suspension is very close and with 20 inch rear tires...it slides just as good.

    Agreed...if Yamaha had done that....

Thanks for all your help. That engine was not the parts lot I was refering to. I decided to go after it at the last minute after watching it for several days. I just wish it was a six speed. Hey, is there a way to change that? I know how to do it in a Tri Z bottom end, would it be the same?

The TRi-Z kickstarter setup is on different by the sidecover.. There is a gear in the sidecover that allows for forward kick. The YZ sidecover does not have the casting for the gear and the kickstart shaft to mount.

As for your transmission, you will have to swap entire transmissions over, the 6 speed trans has 6 gears on the main shaft, the 5 speed only has five. You will have to switch both shafts, shift forks, and shift drum.

i hvae done that with a Tri Z bottom end. It sounds like it will be the same. What year were the YZ's six speed? Would a Tri Z six speed set up fit a YZ bottom end?
