Exclamation Dial-A-Jet: installed one on my 83R. And it ran really....

Well, I finally got myself to do it. I dropped the money on one. Boy, first I would like to say: it is truly money well spent!! I love it. Installation was easy. The hardest part was tapping out the hex nut on the bottom of the float to utilize the DAJ...and that was easy . I put it on, and was extremely surprised to get it to start and keep running on the first kick. I put it on when it was roughly 70 degrees outside, and took her out. I couldnt believe how easy it was to "Dial" in. And today I only rode for about 10 minutes, but it was 49 degrees out. Boy, I sure dont miss taking the carb out and rejetting!!

I Have approx 1 hour of seat time with it on..and I still dont have it all set up 100% as i have experienced temperature changes of 30 degrees (At my house it was 73, and 30 miles away where i was working on it it was 41) and havent ridden in any place for very long, but It has noticble things: like I noticed it seems to rev quicker and accelerated slighty faster.

I will keep you all updated...hopefully with pics. BTW thanks to all who responded to my previous questions about this unit as I am glad I took your advice on gettin one

Did you jet the carb lean before you installed it or just slap it on there?

I used it again today...I cant seem to get the plug to have the right color. I am continuly fouling the plug, and it is usually somewhat oily. I have it mixed at 32:1, and I am running INJEX 2 stroke oil.

I am however going to get amsoil the next tank...what do you guys recommend.

I have alot of questions because this is my first spring with it, and i have only put about 1 hr. of seat time on her before I installed the DAJ.

Yes dammit! lol, I leaned it out...well actually my cousin helped me with that part. Is it possible to lean it out to much? Any tips to get it to not foul so easy are appreciated. BTW, it seems to kill real easy when starting out from a stop when I let out the clutch.
    THANKS in advance

The dial-a-jet does not effect the pilot jet. If you are fouling plugs with the dial-a-jet on the leanest setting then your main jet is to big. I leaned my needle 1 notch and went down 4 main jets sizes when i installed mine From the stock settings.

Ok, thanks for the responses. Well, Lets see here:

TWGRANGER: Whenever I foul a plug it has a lot of gas/oil on it. It wont even fire when I have the DAJ set on the small holes. It will only fire and or run on the 3 largest holes you can get...even then it still fouls way too easy.

FOX250R: I use regular unleaded pump gas...do you think I should go up to the middle octane pump gas (SRY...its been a long day, and I cant remember what the octane numbers are) I do have quite a bit of motor work done, so maybe I should. The previous ownner never instructed me on what gas he used. I think Ill try it, as it wont hurt LOL

83 185S: I think I am going to try it at 40:1 if It wont work after I do what TWgranger advised.

BARRY_MANN: I paid $70 dollars for it, and $10 for my snorkel kit (which I already lost the O-ring and cover cuz it actually vibrated off LOL) I got mine from the local parts shop, and they ordered direct from Thunder Products Inc. and my cost woas the same through the local guys as it was from TPI. Actually, cheaper because of no shipping

and Edog..cant leave ya out man so: I LOVE THAT TRIKE YOU GOT man..man.."only if only"

Well, I rode it again today. Even though I only got like 7-8 minutes of actual running time, because it would keep foulin out the NGK's, and everytime I took them out, they would be full of lots og gas/oil. I only got it to run (crappy but it ran), when the DAJ was on the largest hole setting, and even then it was sluggish and wanted to kill when I would start off from first, even with it pinned to the heavens!! Also, when I was riding it, it would not even accelerate right..it would lug, and 3rd gear felt like maybe 20-28 mph tops, but iono because I just got done riding the neigborrs 450R lol.)

thanks to all, and please respond If you have any more info.

You need to lean out the needle and main jet. What size pilot jet do you have in it?

I don't have a DAJ so I may be wrong here but, I think the smaller holes are the richer settings. The larger holes are leaner. Sounds backwards but I'm pretty sure that's right. I think you need to lean it the jetting some more so you have some room for the DAJ to operate.

I seriously doubt your pre-mix ratio has anything to do with it.

You are right. The smaller holes are richer and bigger are leaner. His jetting is way too rich for it to be fouling plugs with the dial-a-jet.

Ok, TWGRANGER: If I am mixing way too rich what should I do next? Im not 100% sure my cousin Paul put a different pilot jet in it. I wasnt there through the whole process. My clymer says mix at 20:1 and its now at 32:1. I will call and ask him tonight.

I have called DAJ twice and havent gotten any good info yet...this site is way better. Oh, and Yep yer right..I was doing the setting backwards (TRIKEZILLA SLAPS HIMSELF AROUND A BIT WITH A LARGE TROUT!)'

thanks guys for the help guys....i really appreciate it. I was beginning to think I wasnt ever gonna be able to own a decent 2 stroke trike, but its makin more sense now WOOT WOOT!!
