I am one of those mid thirties guys that had a three wheeler when I was in my teens. It was one of the greatest possesions I ever had. Unfortunatley I sold it when I went away to college. I am currently getting back into the sport and find the 4 wheelers very expensive, and they don't look near as fun. I am working on a rare blue 1983 honda 110. It has perfect plastic, decals, frame, etc. I hope to teach my wife to ride this one and possibly acquire another larger trike for myself. I really want the 200X, but they are getting harder to find.

My main concern for my wife is saftey and other riders on our local trails. Do you guys experience any disrespect or "hazing" from other riders on trails? As we all know 3 wheelers got a bad wrap from the press and now everyone that observes me restoring a trike thinks I'm crazy. Even my wife is reluctant to learn to ride because she has bought in to all the bad publicity. I used to ride with the best of them, however my wife will want to be very cautious and will want to ride slow. I'm curious how the 2 wheelers and 4 wheelers will react? Any comments?

you make it sound like your introducing a rabbit into a lions pen...if other offroaders have problems with you or wifes rides, they have the issues and not you. if they do anything to you or wife, i say you have the right to throughly teach them the lesson that 3 wheels are better than 4...nah but seriously, i have never had someone, other than freinds, do anything to show their dislike of my ride. we are all offroaders wether it be on 2,3 or 4 wheels.

You should look for a 250 SX or ES for yourself... how tall and heavy are you ?

I am 5' 10" about 195 pounds. Is the ES the big red?

oh.. and i don't get any dis-respect on the trails.. it's actually the oposite.

Most guys will stop and ask questions about the trike as they are now kinda rare.. i'm pretty much the only one out there on 3 wheels in my area.

Most guys respect and it blows their mind that a 20 year old trike can keep up with the big quads in the mud-fields !!! I kinda get a kick out of it ! LOL>.

Yes.. the ES is the big red... in 85 and 86 they have rear suspension.. reverse, and are shaft drive.. no chains to mess with !

Bigger than the 200 X size wise.

I would recomend the 85-87 Big Red. It has full suspension, shaft drive, electric start, front & rear racks, and it gives a very nice ride. It is very copmfortable on the trails, and it is reliable too.

Welcome to the board I also have a new found love for 3wheelers. From the age of 5 to 16 years of age I had many trikes and never went a day without one. Then I kinda lost interest in them because girls were the only thing on my mind LOL. But over the past few years (im now 33) I have fallin back in love with these little buggers and do not see that changing anytime soon. You and I are about he same size so I would suggest something alittle bigger than the 200X. Try something like the 250SX, 350X, or 250R.

to 3wheelerworld. Are you my long lost brother? Your story,age,and trying to get the wife a trike is exactly the same as mine. Their right, you get alot of respect form 2 and 4 wheel riders alike. When we went to the Rumble me and Max went for a short morning ride on the 350X's and everybody stopped what they were doing to look. I think some even got whiplash. With your size I'd recommend a 350X. I'm about 6'1" and 180lbs. and mine fits me perfect. As far as the wife, maybe a 200X or 250sx (if she is iffy on the shifting). Stick with something with suspension. My wife rides my 350X and she is 5'3" and about 105lbs. She just can't start it. (too lite) Just gotta take you time.

Respect is given in the way you act on the trails. I never had an issue just because I was on a trike. But if I acted like a complete moron on anything yeah peeps are gonna be interesting. Now a nonsuspended trike for the wife is nice great learner, but I guarantee, if you get suspension she rides it you will lose it. I wish you luck with the restore!

Mine is the '86 250R, hers is an '85 250SX.
No offense to any 250SX'ers out there but it is a fantastic ride for the wife or girlfriend.
And I LOVE riding it! It's a fabulous trail trike.

Why is a 250SX a good choice for your significant other?
Inexpensive to buy
Electric Start
reverse
auto. clutch
shaft drive
relatively light and VERY maneuverable on the trails
VERY reliable and easy to service.

I have NEVER been "dissed" by the other riders on the trail.
More often than not, they're curious, friendly and ask questions about the "old school" rides.

My wife and I ride together all the time. No disrespect from others at all when riding (could be the .357 I carry?).

I ride a 85 250es Big Red and she has a 84 200es Big red, both are great bikes for trails and very reliable and easy to handle. My 12 yr. olds ride the 200es alot when she lets them. (not the 250 though thats MINE!!!)

I am 6'3" and 285 lbs and have no problems with the 250es, plenty of power and very low first gear (5 speed) for pulling very steep hills.

If you want to blast around and go fast I would recomment something like the 350x but if you just want to trail ride with your wife buy 2 big reds. With the racks you can even carry a tent and cooler or other gear on the rides.

Also with the big reds your wife will have reverse to back out of problems and dead ends instead of man handling a bike around to turn it, and she will appreciate the electric start and so will you when you dont have to climb off to start hers for her all the time.
