    How do you install grips?

I searched, and I couldnt believe that no one asked that question before (maybe im just stupid.)

But, how do you install a set of new grips on clean, chrome handle bars like on my 200s? I heard in some threads you guys would put some gas on them or something like that. Also, how do you make it so they slide on somewhat easy, then become nice and tight afterwards?

Please help a poor fool out.

    Thanks,
    Mike

I used rubber cement to put them on my 20" BMX bike, it worked great and they never slipped over the 2 years that they have been on.

I use a air gun. The expand and slide right on. Removing the old ones is a snap this way also.

I usually just cut the old ones off or shove a flathead screwdriver down in there then spray some wd-40 they slide right off. To keep them on I know they sell something (can't remember what's it called) at my local cycle shop in a spraycan. But I have used everything from hairspray to superglue to doublesided tape. They all work.

A guy I know said you can drop the grips in boiling water for a little bit, that makes them expand so they slide right on and then when they cool and dry overnight, they are on there tight. I haven't tried this so I cannot vouch for this procedure.

I always used spray paint but this last time I tried the Scott grip glue. My god what a PITA those grips were to put on. That stuff dries way too fast but they're on solid once you're done.

I pour a little rubbing alcohol in them, swish it around, pour it out, put a little on the bars - then they go on like butter and shrink back tight over the bars when the rest of the alcohol evaporates. I've been using that trick for 20 years.

lol. ky jelly. just goes to show EVERYTHING IS better with lube
    Caution
Do not "POP WHEELIES" and run for any distance with the ATC. The oil capacity is relatively small and the oil will drain out of the oil pump area thus causing loss of oil pressure, resulting in costly engine damage -CLYMER

    Thumbs up

I cut the old ones off with a razor blade and $#%# can them then spray WD-40 inside the new grips, and slide them on with ease. Put the bike in the sun for a little bit to let them dry out and then im done. They dont budge. The wd-40 evaporates off while its in the sun.

I like the AirHose method. Just did it last night. If ya don't have air, go with some form of fast evaporating spray like the others posted. It works good too. To get them off, razor blade if they are worn out and are being tossed, screwdriver and WD-40/silicone spray like ChrisR said.

Shuv a flat bladed screwdriver under the grip and then spray windex under the grip to get it off. To keep the new grips tight spray hair spray in the grips and slide them on. Let them sit for a couple hours. I have had good luck with the hair spray on bikes.
