I like steel,,,,, Aluminium is lighter, but steel lasts longer,,,, I do have a sidewinder aluminum sprocket on my XR500,,, and it has lasted years, probably 3 or 4 chains,,,,, Great sprocket but expensive

this is my theory on chain and sprockets....
go aluminum but use o-ring chain and lube alot
go steel and use non o-ring chain and lube alot.
it may sound funny, but do it and u will see................ a mx pro rider taught me this...................![]()

I usually use steel with an o-ring chain, no problems,,,,, Keep in mind that ATV chains, take way more stress than dirtbike chains,,,

Other than being lighter, there is no advatage to an aluminum sprocket. A steel one will last a lot longer. I got an aluminum rear for my R because the price and size was right, but its already showing showing wear when my steel one was still great after 3 times the time on it. Also if you dont have a swingarm skid plate, the aluminum takes a lot less abuse.
Ever notice nobody makes an aluminum front sprocket? Thnink about why that might be.
