I just bought a 1983 honda atc 200 and it has a seperate gear knob by the shifter. I was wondering, what is that for?

I am 100 percent positve its only an atc 200 thats what it says on the vin number and everything is original. but i will have pics in a couple of days to show.
if it is a 200e they are great.. i never get stuck in mine, goes along good too. and the lever would be to switch into low range and high range.. if not its just an inicator for what gear you are in.
