    Airfooler tranny Q's

my 82 250r has the same problem that my 84 did at first, 3rd gear is torn. skips and jumps all around and it grinds like a son of a gun. this is the same witht the orional motor in my 84 and the other spare motor it came with. My question is, is this a common problem for these models or is it just my bad luck. How hard are these motors to rebuild and to replace that gear? could I do it myself. I can build car motors from scratch but ive never taken a small motor down to the bare. thanks

VERY common on all 81-84 250R's. I had 4 motors for my 84' everyone of them needed to be gone through with new shift forks (and some gears). These motors are SIMPLE to rebuild. The tranny is a piece of cake! Just get a good diagram and keep things where they belong and you will be set. These are by far one of the easiest engines that I have done a complete rebuild on.
Give me no lip and I tell you no lie.

I had to replace the shift forks on mine last year because it would not shift into third.

Be prepared for rear caliper failure also especially on the 83/84R

    go for it

if you have good mechanical knowledge. tear her apart. its actually pretty fun. pay close attention to the fingers on the shift forks, make sure all bushings are good. and check all the faces on the teeth of the gears for chips and pitting. the only bad thing about tearing into this stuff is that you cant get parts from honda (discontinued). so hopefully you can find some good used parts elsewhere. if you have any questions just let me know. ive been into mine twice. if you have a clymer manuel it will be helpful. good luck max
