Does a Honda XL100 need a battery to spark?

One of my friends just got a 1979 Honda XL100 to fix for another friend. The bike has been sitting and is missing the battery (6 volt) and when we checked for spark it didn't get it. On some old bike the battery was needed just for a spark, is this one of them?

bridge the gap withs something and see if it sparks, my XL250 has a dead battery in it that only has enough juice to power the neutral light after half an hour of riding, but I leave it in so the bike will run. The battery is just there to keep the lights from dimming while idling or cruising at low RPM

i have an xl100 and a cl100. both had batteries but the wiring was so screwed up i rewired them so they will run with out a battery.

so to answer your question no you don't need a battery if you change the wires around.

but for $10 get the battery.

and the older ones are they are 6 volt. so you will need a 6 volt charger to charge the battery.

First of all to tell you have to find out what type of ignition you have to have. since its honda its going to be behind other makes(not honda bashing buth there bike were behind) if it has an internal rotor for a charging system then yes you need a battery unless you can kick it fast enough to use power from the headlight. But I don't think you would need a battery since the 79 honda 400 hawk i had didn't but then again it had cdi. it could be the points are dirty scrape them off and try it.
