Not to many that i know of...Engine pinging is one but theres really nothing you can do about that ,they all do it as far as i know.
haha yeah....

The big one is the left side case by the front sprocket, chain breaks and messes stuff up, and if its bad enough it will put a hole in the case, or worse, and its not cheap to fix correctly, so keep an eye out for JB weld.
Stripped Drain Plug, loose swingarm/linkage bushings, loose carrier bearings
make sure the brakes work.
Look at the brake pads see if they are worn out, check the chain and sprockets for excessive wear, look for other indications of neglect,
Ask the seller what premix ratio they run and what brand oil.
Remove the radiator cap and look for sludge or oil, start the bike, and look for bubbles in the water (bad head gasket)
A good running 250R will start within 1 or 2 kicks most times.
Those are just a few things to check, none of it is terminal, and may not mean that you shouldnt buy the bike, just be aware of what you are spending your money on, and factor in any future costs of owning and maintaining a bike like this. (and remember the bike is 20 years old! 99% of the time its not gonna be perfect.) HH
Also, pull the airbox lid. Look for air filter (does it have one?), mouse nests, total neglect, etc. That will give you a basic idea on what the engine has been sucking into itself.

Oner problem I had with my 85 was that the axle carrier adjustment teeth were all chewed up, and the carrier was "froze" in the swing arm, so I couldnt adjust the chain, It really adds up when you have to start buying new carriers and what not. so look at the teeth on the left side of the carrier and ask the seller to spin it for you so you know that its not stuck in one spot. Good luck!!!
