Did you try a new spark plug by chance? A backfire could foul your plugs.

I personally think that the only way it would have jumped time is if the Chain already had a large amount of slack. I would think you would have herd that chain before. If the motor was runing quite and good, I would look else were. Coil, stator, CDI what not. The back fire was prob it loading up on fuel, due to the weak spark not buring the excess fuel.

To quickly check if you jumped, when you open your cdi, is the 2 lines in the cdi matched up with F on the flywheel? (tdc on engine backed up slightly) The lines on the black box and the box that rotates with timing chain. If its not you need to go further in. Further in, You need to remove the cdi unit. Behind it is your top timing chain sprocket. With the chain on it. What you will do is set the engine at TDC, on "T" (flywheel again) rockers loose, and see if the "O" on the sprocket lines up with the notch above on the case cover itself. Oh yeah if you do get there, how loose is that chain?

I probably lost you on this so you may very well need a manual. But Timing chain pretty much controls, the valve opening, and when to tell the cdi to spark. If it jumps, it will spark wrong time, valves open wrong time, alot relies on this. IF you have a multi meter, you can quickly check all electronic goodies before even checking the timing, that way, saves you some tear down time, if it is indeed there. That way simple read of the meter would save alot of time. You will get 2 different types of backfire, one through exhaust (burning of excess gas) like Clay mentioned, and one through the carb. Carb is timing. Another thing you can do is put your hand over the carb, is it sucking or blowing. This is when you of course try to fake start it. Sucking is good, blowing your a not timed, or valve adjustment needed. In your case if your carb indeed does the blowing, added with the other symptons, I am willing to bet the chain went a jumping. I hope this all makes sense.

Read through the book, then it will all make sense. You are gonna find the timing chain around the uninstall reinstall the head section.
