"T" mark is for top dead center, that's the one you want. I think the F mark is used for ignition purposes, not valve timing. You want to set the piston at Top Dead Center (TDC) on the compression stroke. At this point both sets of rockers should have slack (unless they're adjusted too tight). As you turn the motor over, watch the valves as they open and close. When the intake valve has closed, you're coming up on the comp. stroke. I think .008 is too loose (don't have my manual in front of me), I think I use .003 for intake and .004 for exhaust. Just don't make them too tight. A tight valve will cause compression loss and eventually a burnt valve. Just hope your ticking noise is loose valves and not a wiped out top end. Saw the pics of your x, looked pretty decent.
