    SX and ES rear end tip !

    Was checking everything out today.. noticed my rear end oil was contaminated ( grey and milky ) so being the " sometimes lazy " type..

    Fire it up.. find a place to run in 5th for a few minutes.. warm the oil up real good. put the oil tray under the rear end...remove the fill cap.. and pick up the front forks.. (* i'm 5 foot 9.. 160 lbs.. and i found it light.. so you don't have to be hercules ).. and lifted the front to the ballance point and a bit more. And all the oil poured right out !

    For you safety concious out there.. consider placing blocks behind the rear tires.... LOL...

    Saves the hasle of removing the diff protector and drain plug.
    Currently :

    Nice, here's another tip from personal experience:

    If the the previous owner put grease in there instead of oil ( ) use an air gun to clean it out, but be ready for a mess!!!! LOL

    I have done this. If you have some nasty junk oil/grease in there, drain it, and wash it out with carb or throttlebody cleaner. It really cleans it good. Vaporates off real quick too. Then filler up.

    Is it a good or bad thing to " Tip The Tire " an inch or so to get a few more ml's of oil in there?

    I know what your thinking.. The thing barely holds any oil but it is enough to lubricate it. I wouldn't add any extra oil but I do put the cap on while it's still overflowing a bit.

    Only thing to remember is that if it's milky then water is getting in there. The breather hose goes way up high on the frame so I doubt thats where the water is coming from. It's usually the swing arm boot or on the 1985's there was a problem where the swingarm mates to the diff that allows water in there. Water would have to get past the hub or drum seal and then through the diff ring gear seals if it's getting in there that way. And If it's getting in through the swing arm area then the front seal on the pinion gear is definately shot and you also have a water entry point somewhere.

    I have a small tip also.

    When changing your oil filter the spring behind it never wants to stay in place and if I do get the filter in I always if the spring didn't fall a bit below where it should go although I don't think that can happen.

    Anyway to BE SURE it's seated proper I just jack the side way over to the point of it almost tipping with a jack stand under the footpeg and the spring stays in position while installing the filter.

    My vent line is routed correctly.. checked that.

    my Boot ( *-joint boot ) should be leak free.. i put cylicone on it and clamped it down tight.. but will check that again.. ( Gonna coat it in Automotive Goop, waterproof sealing compound ) ..

    The bearings and seals on the diff were not touched when i re-did my rear end.. but i think i'm gonna have them done soon.

    When i push the bike by hand in Neutral i can hear a creaking sound once in a while.. either failing bearings.. or something else....... hard to poinpoint !

    Gotta love trikes when it comes to man handling them.. try tipping a 700 lbs quad on it's side by yourself !!! LOL...

    I sat on one of those 700 lb monsters at the Honda shop today. For me personally, I just don't see how I could have any fun on one of those. Their so big that I bet there are a lot of trails not wide enough for them to get through (in my area anyway).

    I wouldn't be surprised if some come with cup holders now

    Almost as big as my wifes 88 Honda CRX -SI that she once had!

    LOL, them there big quads suck. My mom just bought a brand new Outlander MAX (one of em' 2 seaters) and it handles like crap. It's like 9" longer then a normal quad

    Gives a good ride though I must admit...

    YEA, I did!!!! What a surprise when I came home today

    Good indestructable packing you did also. Duct tape, styrafoam nuggets, cardboard weaving, packaging tape........the works!

    I'll use those triples for mine as the bottom ones have a better coat of paint on them. A great deal..........THANKS!

    Light has that one little tab off on top R but thats no biggie at all really. A bit of sanding and that thing will look A-OK!

    The water is probably getting in by your rear axle bearings. My rear end oil was getting water in it that way.

    Or you can just put a dab of grease on the spring and that will hold it. This allows your left hand to be free to reach your beer

    Grease will hold that spring? I would of thought the spring is too heavy. I'll try it next time and see.

    i've always managed to hold the spring in place holding the filter.. then slide the cover over the filter in a quick motion and that's it !
    .

    Never had problems with that part .
